Passive Smoking

hermy by hermy Talking Back(March 2007) (rank 92nd)

           I am a smoker and would really like to make people aware of the damage we are causing our children, this is why I have decided to write this advice.......

         Children of parents who smoke;

n

Cough and wheeze more then other children

n      They have reduced lung capacity

n      They suffer bronchitis more often

n      They have more ear infections

n      They make more trips to the hospital

n      They are more likely to develop asthma

         According to research, it has been proven if a mother smokes before and after child birth, the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) increases......

        Smoking during pregnancy causes problems to the baby

These problems include;

n      Smaller babies

n      Miscarriage

n      Premature birth or still born

Some of the immediate effects of passive smoking include;

n      Eye irritation

n      Headache

n      Cough

n      Sore throat

n      Dizziness

 Just 30 minutes of exposure is enough to reduce heart blood flow.

    Children who are exposed to passive smoking in their home or any enclosed places eg; cars---Risk developing heart disease and lung cancer.

    Children of mothers who smoke during pregnancy are said to be more likely to have behavioural problems.

     Practical steps that could be taken to minimise our children’s exposure to tobacco smoke are;

n      To smoke only outside. If you must smoke inside limit this to 1 room and make sure this room has good ventilation

n      Never smoke in a child’s bedroom

n      Do not allow your visitors to smoke in your house

n      Do not smoke while washing, dressing or playing with your children

n      Never smoke in the car with the windows shut, never smoke in them when children are present

           When I had my first set of children this awareness was not as well documented and it was very common for most smokers to smoke in their home, in their cars and around their children. My children both suffered the severity of this action Charlotte developed Asthma and Brendan had Severe Bronchitis. When Brendan’s bronchitis would not clear after 2 months, I woke up to myself and realised that it was my smoking that was keeping him sick, by then it was already to late. Both my children suffered because of my non education to the fact that passive smoking was causing them so much damage.

          This is why I think that there can never be enough written on this subject.

      I, for the last 16 yrs have followed these strict rules;

 *  No smoking in the house

 *  No smoking around the children

 *  No smoking in the car when the children are in it.

       I think we should all educate ourselves as much as possible on the damage that passive smoking causes in our children.....

   I hope this helps......

two years and counting

one day two years ago, i asked my children what they wanted for Christmas, and then i went into a horrible coughing fit , and gasping for air, i heard two of my kids say, 'we want you to be around for next Christmas and if you keep smoking then you wont'. so i started to think about what they had said, and that Christmas eve i had my last cigarette ever, its been 2 years now and i feel so much better and i owe it to my kids for waking me up to myself, thanks for the fresh air kids!!

Ian

Smoke free is best

My parents were not smokers, but when I was young it was socially acceptable to walk into a non-smokers house and light up. When my little brother developed croup as a toddler Mum put a no-smoking sign at the front door and took months to convince everyone that she was serious. Many smokers stopped coming around, and those that kept visiting were the sensible ones who were more than happy to stay outside. From then on my brother never had another bout of croup and has healthy lungs as an adult. My brothers and I have never taken up smoking either as we have been brought up with the knowledge that it is a very bad habbit. I think apart from the impact on young children, parents who smoke need to consider the impact it will have on them as teenagers and adults. Do you want your kids to smoke when they grow up? They are twice a likely to if you smoke. Do you want your kids to be nursing you if you develop lung cancer or heart disease or emphysema, or do you want to see your grandkids grow up and be able to run around with them? The effects of smoking and passive smoking impacts more than just one generation.

(PS. when I say "you" I'm reffering to all smoking parents.

Hmmmm I don't actually get the comment you jsut wrote about kids being more likely to smoke if our parents do I really do disagree with you there most of my friends are non smokers not reformed smokers non smokers and ya know what their parents were smokers so with that one I am sure you are wrong...My brother doesn't smoke but I do...Think it is just how silly you are to start sorry if that offends anyone but I think i was silly to start....Kids of today have alot more education about the harm this causes smoking or passive there fore alot less are choosing to smoke....(Not what you wrote hermy the comment above it)

so true Angie,

i was an 11 year old when i started and needless to say very silly indeed, but with all the education and info available to our children's generation lets hope they are not as silly as some of us, armed with such info, i wonder if i would have started myself, i know i wish i didn't, but all my peers said it was "cool" to smoke, how foolish was i to believe such experts on coolness!! NEVER AGAIN lol :]

I was watching A Current Affair years ago that gave the stats on the likely hood of children ending up smokers if their parents smoke. I will get the definite stats for you when I can but for the meantime here is a link to some useful info on passive smoking and smoking when pregnant

I am a former smoker
Yay i can say it again lol. 4 days in and counting.
I think all the risks they say while your pregnant are crap. I had 2 healthy and nice sized babies 8p4o and 9p5o and they dont have behavioural problems. They werent small and they arent backwards. They dont get sick more than any other babies infact they arent sick often at all. Jaidan is a little more than chase but thats because he has gotten the dreaded asthma gene that runs through both sides of our family.
Smoking around your children yes I will agree with all that.
Well written. Thanks

No Smoking
Hi
No smoking would be better lol....keep the smoke away from the kids and give their lungs a chance
We can't let anyone smoke around Jalan as it is too damaging for her lungs regardless.
Most smokers are pretty good when we tell them why we wont allow it
Some smokers are jsut ignorant and this is a shame but such is life

Great advice...
Okay although I don't agree with all the things smoking during pregnancy can cause etc....I think smoking parents should not smoke around their kids because they love them and don't want to risk it..Great advice and yes I am a smoker too..
Cheers
