obesity

hermy by hermy Talking Back(March 2007) (rank 93rd)

                Just the other day I was reading an article in the telegraph where the Ambulance Service has been forced to introduce super sized ambulances......

                Apparently the work; load for these heavy duty ambulances

have doubled in the last 3 yrs.....

               Recent studies estimate 67 percent of Australian men and 52 percent of Women aged 25 years and over are overweight or obese.

               The weight epidemic has also extended to the school playground with NSW health estimating that the number of children overweight or obese has more than doubled.....

                Fat in our diet is essential for good health as it provides the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K, these protect the body’s internal organs and provide energy.....

                Fat is only required in small amounts. Large amounts can cause harm by providing more energy than required, resulting in overweight and obesity.....

                A high fat consumption is also contributing to other disorders including heart disease and some types of cancers.....

                It is important that we teach our children the right way......

         Limit sit around time;

n      TV

n      Computer

n      Games (play station)

Encourage active time;

n      Sports

n      Playing outside

n      Going to the park, going for walks

n      bike riding

Encourage healthy eating habits;

n      Choose poultry, fish and lean red meats when shopping

n      When buying lean cuts of meat still trim off excess fat

n      Use baking, grilling, steaming to cook foods

n      Discard fat drippings

n      Buy low fat cheeses eg; cottage, ricotta and low fat yoghurts

n      Eat more cereals, fruit and vegetables

n      Spread butter or margarine very thinly

Resist;

n      Fried foods, high fat take away foods, pastries, biscuits, cakes and chocolate

n      High fat salad dressings, gravies and cream sauces

n      Full cream milk, high fat cheeses and ice cream

n      Salami types meats

               It is important to remember that children under 5 yrs should have whole milk.

              Remember that it all begins by setting a good example for our children.

               Hope this helps...........

Re: obesity

Hi Sandra, excellent advice about a very important topic that is getting way out of hand.  I also linked some of your great articles about nutrition and healthy snacking to this, as it is high time that people became more aware of the consequences of their actions.  Cheers champ - Lui. xox

watch your own diet as well as your children's
I am pleased to say that because of the amount of education that is present today, I have chosen my daughter's diet from day one.  I knew the moment I fell pregnant that no artificial milk would be used, only breast milk. I knew that only water would be offered apart from milk when the time was right to introduce other fluids and I knew enough to give veges before giving fruit so she's more likely to eat her veges.  My daughter was a huge sushi-lover by 18 months and only had take-away for the first time after her 3rd birthday apart from sushi.  It's good to put it out there though, and make people aware of the risks.  I am a vegetarian, however my daughter is offered tuna and salmon at times, and the sushi she eats is the salmon and avocado sushi.  I still think that far more emphasis needs to be put on this problem before people realise because so often the advertising campaigns sway parents to buy 'easy snacks to go' and 'lunchbox size treats' for school that are marketed as being healthy. When mums are working and in a hurry all the time, it's easier to buy pre-packaged foods than cut up raw vege sticks or make some home-made healthy muffins etc.  I know, I'm a busy working single mum too and I know how tempting it is to have a stock of lunch box snacks in the pantry for 'grab-and-go' convenience.  Thanks for the article, well written.

yes its sad to say there are to many vhildren suffering overweight and obesity......and even though there is plenty of information on it there are still to many people who arent fully educated....or they just dont want to be....fully agree with your comment on convenience and that is where people get it wrong.....thank you for your comments......

obesity/diabetes mellitis
This fits in nicely with the comments on diabetes, because developing type 2 diabetes can be prevented by not getting fat in the first place, or loosing weight, exercising enough and eating healthy balanced meals.  Interestingly, it is only the fat around the abdomen that is a problem, but needless to say, the larger the body gets, the more insulin it needs, so even though other fatty deposits are not as  lethal as abdominal fat, it still is not good.
