Changing to Summer Time
- We have put our clocks forwards and we can put baby’s clock forward. Start either the week before or the week of the time change and adjust baby's bedtime by 10 minutes each day. For example - If your baby goes to bed at
7pm, start putting baby down at 7.10, then the next day at 7.20, then 7.30 and so on until you are putting baby down at 8pm the night before the time change if you choose to start the week before or if you choose to start on the first day of the time change (when it feels like 7 but is actually 8pm), put baby to bed at 7.50pm, next day 7.40pm and so on until at the end of the week your baby is going down again at 7pm.
- Ensure the room is dark. Follow any normal bedtime routines and attempt to trick the baby into thinking it is dark out. Just remember that your baby is likely to sleep in an hour later!
- Undoubtedly the toddler will be out of sorts. Allow a week of unsettledness and then get back into your normal routines.
- Remember that an overtired baby is more difficult to settle and rapid change can be disruptive so the slower the process, the easier it is to adjust.
Changing Back to Standard Time
- We have put our clocks backwards, we can help put baby’s clock backward too. Over the course of one week adjust baby's bedtime by 10 mins each day.
For example - If your baby goes to bed at 7pm, if you choose to start the week before, put your baby to bed at 6.50 the first night , 6.40 the next, then 6.30 and so on until you are putting your baby to bed at 6pm the night before the time change, and if you start after the time change has occured, start by putting your baby to bed at 6.10pm (when it feels like 7.10), next day 6.20pm and so on until at the end of the week you are putting your baby to bed at 7pm again.
- Ensure you are getting enough sleep and may need to go to bed early to deal with an early waking child.
- Accept that for the week as your child adjusts, you may be waking up early as well.
- Undoubtedly the toddler will be out of sorts. Allow a week of unsettledness and then get back into your normal routines.
- Remember that an overtired baby is more difficult to settle and rapid change can be disruptive so the slower the process, the easier it is to adjust.
