Heartburn During Pregnancy

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 2nd)

With my job I saw a lady today with her brand new two hour baby (lovely job)

The amount of hair the baby had was amazing

I swear the new baby needed a hair cut She had beautiful Jet Black hair. Gorgeous.

Of course

I commented and we then had a long discussion on Heartburn during pregnancy.......

Is it a myth?
But have you all heard that if you get heartburn during pregnancy then its likely your baby will have lots of hair!!!
I don't know if its true but the lady I saw today. Now believes it!!!!

Heartburn

This is a really uncomfortable sensation very similar to bad indigestion pain and it can spread from your breastbone all along to your throat. Once it starts it is likely it will carry on throughout the remainder of the pregnancy.

Treatment
If you get severe Heartburn, it is okay to take a recommended Antacid formula such as Gaviscon. But you must ALWAYS check with your midwife/doctor before taking it, just because Antacid is non prescribed you should still check it is safe to take when pregnant.

Prevention
There is really not a lot you can do to prevent heartburn, but there are several things you can try to cut down the chances of getting it.

Do Not Eat Large Meals - Try eating little and often as opposed to one large meal several times a day.
Avoid Spicy Foods - Much as you may like spicy foods, if you are prone to Heartburn it is better to avoid these foods whilst pregnant or you are guaranteed to be suffering later.
Foods to avoid - chocolate acidic foods like citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, mustard, processed meats, fried or fatty foods.
Avoid Alcohol - Again this can start up Heartburn
No Fizzy Drinks - Think is the one I found the hardest when I suffered with Heartburn, as I am a complete Cola Addict
Do Not Eat Late At Night - Not eating food before you go to bed, gives your food time to digest properly, it takes longer to digest when lying down. It is also advisable to prop yourself up with pillows when asleep as this will keep the stomach acids down.
Try Chewing Gum - When chewing gum you increase the saliva which then neutralises the acids in your stomach
Drink plenty of Water - But again as with the food, drink little and often not several glasses in one sitting
No Smoking - Obviously it is recommended to not smoke during pregnancy anyway. But did you know smoking also increases your stomach acidity levels
Knee Bends Only -
Also to stop you having Back ache but again if you bend at the knees instead of your waist it lessens the stomach acid rising up and starting up the heartburn

Hope this helps. From what I remember Heartburn is a really miserable experience

Re: Heartburn During Pregnancy

Ive had heartburn throughout my pregnancy, but now Im in the last 4 weeks its getting really bad, especially at night.  But last night I put a couple of pillows between the mattress and bed base and that extra inch or so made an amazing difference.  I wasnt woken by my throat being on fire ONCE.  No, I just woke to go to the loo 7 times instead!!!!

Re: Heartburn During Pregnancy
OK, I reported in my earlier reply that I had terrible heartburn with my son, and it so happened that he was born with lots and lots of hair. With my twins, I hardly experienced heartburn and what do you know...they hardly have hair! THey are 3 1/2 months old and still have very short hair (almost bald). At this age, big brother already got his first haircut.

Myth?
Funny isn't it
Most people you ask say its not true but the people who do believe in it are really convinced there has to be something in it

myth

I think it's a myth. How can heartburn be related to the baby having a lot of hair?   But that said, I had terrible heartburn when I was pregnant with my son and he was born with a lot of hair, long hair! His hair was so long, that my husband and I had to give him a haircut when he was 3 months old.

myth
Forgot to add that though I look like I'm already 9 months pregnant (when I'm really just 5 months), I haven't had trouble with heartburn. I have it occassionally, but nothing bad like I had with my son. So, we'll have to see whether the girls are born with lots of hair or not.

Sounds like the baby I saw in the hospital with the full head of hair
I know lots of people that say its a myth and I equally know lots that say its true
I'm not convinced myself but it is strange

Heart burn

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww . . .not fond memories let me tell you . . .  I had it for 40 weeks with my second pregnancy . . It was cruel.

Another helpful bit of advice is grated apple, you grate it then let it go slightly brown and then eat it!

Sounds horrible I know but it does work .  . . . . . .  GREAT ARTICLE

Cheers Kellz

Not sure if it's true
Actually.. I heard that it's a myth but I still don't believe it. The reason why is because I never had it at all during my pregnancy and my daughter came out with a head full of hair. I mean her head was covered with hair!!!
But......... my mom told me that through-out my entire pregnancy that she had heart burn. (she lives more than 3000 miles away too!!)
