Anyone who's using Formula instead of breast milk...

allyp by allyp Young Parent(June 2006) (rank 6th)

This is for anyone who's using formula or planning on formula feeding your baby.

I think there are 3 different kind's of formula: Powder, Concentrate and Ready to use

Personally from my expereince I like the Concentrate, all you have to do is boil water for 5 minutes, then let it cool.. and then it's 50/50 (half concentrate, half water)
Powder, well you have to mix it all together(scoop out the amount you want, and then pour in the water), and I think it takes more time. I've tried it and I don't like it.
Then there's ready to use, i have used this also myself and it's good for when your in a hurry to give your baby formula because all you do is pour it into his/her bottle and it's good to go! But its very expensive, if you plan to use that everyday.

But yet again, it's your decision, but this is my own personal decision. I thought that I would share some of my advice that I have learned from formula.

formula
Hi ,.. I use the powder formula called good start for my 9 month old as well as I used it for my 2 yr old when she was on formula... I have tried the cans, but found the powder a cheaper alternative .. I have tried a few other kinds of formula with my 9 month old but found they all made her gassy where as the good start is supposed to me made gentler on their tummies .. or so the can says lol ... as far as the 50/50 and ready to use formula my son is going to be 6 soon and I remember using both of those when he was a baby .. not too sure if they where available before that though. Also I used bottled distilled water that I buy at the grocery store which was oked by my paediatrician when my son was born, and so forth .. I have always checked with the drs for every baby and they have said it is fine .. much easier to buy a couple of jugs of water at the grocery store and just pour it as I need it instead of boiling.

ready to use
I have to say that the ready to use formula may be more expensive but my baby gets gas from everything else.  The powder formula has so much air in it from shaking that he spits up all day if I give it to him and the 50-50 formula isnt all that less expensive than the ready made.  Its just so much easier and less time consuming for me to just pour it into the bottle for him and have him drink it right away.

Not the same in Australia
Hi,  That was interesting.  In Australia we have the one scoop v 50 ml of pre-boiled water formula in ,ilk, soy, milk lactose free and now with added omega 3 (for smarter babies), but all the milk ones are pretty much the same.  I have not come across 50-50 or ready to go here at all.  I wonder why, are they new out??

I dont think they are new. But I am not sure on that at all. That gives me something to look into.

Does omega 3 really make your baby smarter though? I always wondered that!!
