Meningitis....Signs and Symptoms

hermy by hermy Talking Back(March 2007) (rank 95th)

          I decided to write an advice on meningitis. This illness is very dangerous and can be life threatening if not caught in time....

           Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord......

  Signs of meningitis;

n      High fever

n      Stiff neck

n      Severe and persistent headache

n      Bulging soft spot in children

n      Nausea

n      Vomiting

n      Dislike to bright lights

n      Changes in behaviour eg; confusion, sleepless and difficulties in waking

n      Seizures

n      Irritability-high pitch or moaning cry

n      Rash-purple bruises on the body

Not everyone gets all the symptoms or do they happen in this order.....

Complications of meningitis;

n      Loss of hearing

n      Loss of sight

n      Loss of limbs

n      Learning disabilities

n      Brain damage

n      Death

          Meningitis is a viral and or bacterial infection that moves very quickly. A child will usually get sick quickly and get worse very fast, check your child often, including through the night. If you are suspicious that your child has some symptoms seek medical advice immediately

          They now have a number of vaccines available for meningitis, but sadly they do not cover against all the different types of meningitis.....

           The bacterial meningitis can be treated with antibiotics and viral meningitis may require little treatment. Every child is affected differently.....

           There is just so much that could be written on this subject......this is just a little of it....

            One important thing to remember is to please immunize your children, if you are concerned about your child see the doctor straight away.......

            I hope this helps...........

meningitis

Do you have personal experience with meningitis? I would love to hear about it.

You're right about vacciness not covering all of the kinds of meningitis there are. When I was in college, the students were mandated to get a vaccine because of an outbreak. No one could register for classes without getting vaccinated, so I headed to the nurse's office. Unfortunately now, several weeks later, I got a letter saying that the vaccine the school gave out wasn't the exact meningitis that caused the outbreak.

I wrote a blog on my page today about my son's personal experince with meningitis, I also copied it as advice - it was Disabled though, so I have to wait to see if it is allowed to be shown? I think perhaps because it has appeared in it's entirety twice on Minti...feel free to check out the blog though!
