No more Dummy

toosh by toosh Talking Back(March 2007) (rank 72nd)

When should your child stop having a dummy? This is really up to the child. I believe children should only have a dummy, if at all, to go to sleep. Both of my boys have/had dummies. The oldest is now 20 months & hasn't had a dummy for about 9

months. He only ever had it to go to sleep (as his 10 week old brother does occasionally too) and when he stopped asking for it we stopped offering. I believe you shouldn't just hand them to you children unless they ask for them or are upset and need them. My mum said I was the same as my boys and I gave mine to a family friends dog at 10 months because I didn't want it anymore. Use your own judgement but let your child decide also. To see other children my sons age or older walking around with a dummy looks odd to us and we are glad we never let him become reliant on it.

Re: No more Dummy

Lol! Oscar won't use one either - he took one in hospital when I had him because the midwives wanted me to give him one & he used it occasionally after we got home. The last few months he has totally refused one & I love it!

Re: No more Dummy
do agree with you....dummy only for sleeping.....did this with my older two......my new babies both have dummies.....Ryan decided at a very young age that he didn't want it anymore.....that was ok, the only thing is he now sucks his thumb......yukkkkkk....anyway have finally started painting his thumb nail with the thing they use for stopping people bitting them.....oh, i hope it works.....his teeth are beginning to suffer because of his thumb sucking......great advice.......regards Sandra xxx

dummy's

well santa is taking ours this year in turn for presents, he only uses it when he is tired and even then some days he doesn't so if it keeps going that way santas got it half the time you will find the frogs leg in the mouth instead of the dummy, frog is a stuffed toy had it longer than the dummy that one is going to be fun thats for sure when it comes time

great advice

Dummy's

My son is 2.5 and still has his dummy! It's funny because my oldest had a dummy and when he was about 18 months old I just took it away one day and he never asked for it, so we thought it would be that easy with our second........wrong......!!  He has his dummy all the time and for him it's a security thing and I would never take it away from until he is ready!  He is also what is called a High Needs child, so taking his dummy away before he is ready would be disastrous for all invovled!!!

I too was of the opinion that dummy's were only for bed and should be gone by the child was 2 years old, but since having my second child I have changed my opinion and think that they are not so bad, he will eventually grow out of it or he will be old enough for me to explain why it needs to go.

dummies

My daughter was about 11 months also when she stopped having the dummy. I agree with what you have said, as we did the exact same thing. The only way we really stopped her all together was one of her toys had her dummy  now, and that toy was having it from then on, and she was fine with it.

I agree

i agree with you but keep getting a poor rating for sayingi don't them and if they are to be used then not past their first birthday. Same with bottles, weaning should begin at 6 months so they are off them by 1.  That's just my opinion though and I don't like them being just handed to a child without anything else being tried first to comfort the child.
