"The Choking Game" And I thought drugs were a danger to my teens

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(March 2007) (rank 7th)
What will be next hey...To say I am in shock would be the understatement of the year from me...I have always thought I was an in tune mum to teenage children and was very practicle about educating them on drugs and sexual practices to try to keep them safe but this
new craze that is becoming so popular amonst teens has just left me lost for words and wondering what the heck I have to do to try and protect my kids...

I think the scariest part about all of it in general for me is if this sort of thing is happening now what is going to be the craze when my young ones get to their teenage years? What will they be doing to get a high...Let me tell you what was on the news today about this whole new fad...

The choking game...

So you thought drugs were your only issue you needed to watch with your teen..Well read on and make sure you are in a comfy seat when you do this because I wouldn't want you to fall or anything...

This is the newest game that teenagers are playing...Our teens are asphyxiating each other to get HIGH...Guess what hundreds are dying and the numbers keep rising...

The way they play what they call a game is they use ties belts their own hands or even a bag anything to cause them lack of oxygen...Their oxgen to their lungs is cut off and this in turn reduces oxgen to the brain and heart making the blood pressure lower and causing the body to move into the beginning of the process of dying...

If this so called game is successful the blood pressure is released and the this in turn allows oxygen to return to the brain and heart giving a high... unfortunately this game is not always successful and this means death is the losing option of this so called game...

Please parents read this link here...

There are some names for the choking game other than this so be careful if you hear your teens talking about any of the other names too...

  • Pass out game
  • Fainting game
  • Tingling game
  • Dreaming game

Okay you want to know I suppose what to keep an eye out for cause the first thing that ran through my mind was how would I even know...Well here is a few

  • Unusual markings on the neck or even if your child is wearing high collared things keep an eye out..
  • Complaints of alot of headaches
  • And lastly blood shot eyes...

talk to your teens about this game and explain to them it is definately no game...Tell them of the dangers of this game and the chance of death...

I am still sitting here thinking WOW this is just so out there it can't be true.....

Take care all
Cheers
Angie

Re: "The Choking Game" And I thought drugs were a danger to my teens

I am 43 now and when I was in highschool at a summer swing choir camp that was being done. When I saw this title I knew when I opened it it would be this stupid ole thing again.

Everyone was doing it and by the end of the week I tried it. I did pass out and when I awoke I was scared to death, had never passed out before and was so frightened and unaware of what had happened while I was out or how long I was out. It was only seconds.

The older boy who I liked and had let do this to me with my firnds circled around me felt badly when he saw my reaction after being aroused. The funny thing is that I will never forget what he then said to me. He said you have never done drugs or drank till you passed out have you? He then appoligized. I felt very uncool then after his question but my firnds knew the truth that I hadn't

If this trend is making a comback I will be telling my boys now and saying something like it kills brain cells and how scary it can be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for this article!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When we were in high school a similar game was played, you didn't choke each other, but you held your breath and someone hugged you really tight, when they let go, you would faint. I never did this myself, but i did see alot of kids doing it. How scary to think that teens are now using belts and ties.

My nephew's daughter died last month from this.  She was only 13.  There is a petition asking for signatures so this can be taught in schools along with the DARE program.  Please sign it.  Perhaps the life it saves will be your child's.  Thanks so much.

Re: "The Choking Game" And I thought drugs were a danger to my teens
I am sad to say that this is not the first time I have heard about this, it also went through a popular phase when I was in Jr high school ( around 1996) It was scary to watch kids pass out in the hall ways then have their friends all laugh about it. Worse is when It was popular before after choking someone they would blow a mouthfull of air into their lungs, problem with that bieng, we dont exhale enough oxegen to suffice for bieng choked untill passing out occurs.  If one of your teenagers or below talk about a friend passing out or any of the above names take immediate action please! School officials never did crack down on these kids when I saw it happening, probably due to the lack of knowlage kids can usually hide one kid with a group of kids, so I agree as well that reguardless you do need to talk to your kids about the dangers of this so called game!

Re: "The Choking Game" And I thought drugs were a danger to my teens
Thank you for sharing this.  It is real and it is a priority for parents to be aware of.  Unfortunately, we cannot blame this on the upbringing of many of our youth.  This new "game" is another way that our youth have been screaming out to us, the parents, that we have not really done all that well a job in the world.  Our example of course, is the way of the world today.  All the things that are not good for the health and wellbeing of the people is now the "norm", TV proves that with its blatant publicity of sex, drugs, alcohol, coupled with lies and self centred vanity.  The fast world we live in is the role model we have passed on to our children.  I say this in a generalised viewpoint, and as such take responsibility for my own personal behaviour and attitudes towards life, and the contribution I have made.  I am not saying I am a bad person, but I have behaved no different to others when it comes to protecting my own reputation and views, thus causing me to say or do things that can be miscontrued by those who see or hear. (both unconsciously and subconsciously).  Whatever these youth are lacking within themselves, is what we need to focus on and then, be ready to share with them freely,...My view is unconditional love.  Acceptance without judgement, correction without belittlement, and understanding coupled with empathy.  Something most of us are trying hard to achieve within our own lives and that of our families, although not always on top of, but then that is the beauty of life... the learning experiences we face each day.

Re: "The Choking Game" And I thought drugs were a danger to my teens

When I was at school (the '80s) there was a craze called 'chroming' which involved spraying the contents of an aerosol can into a paper bag, then breathing in and out of the bag until you got dizzy or something, then you spun around and squatted before standing up in a hurry to get a so-called rush...

Seems kids will always be trying to find the edge of that metaphorical envelope...Whether it's by engaging in this kind of 'game' or by driving on a winding road as fast as they can, they will always be good at finding ways to harm themselves. All us 'grown-ups' can do is be vigilant and ensure they know about risks and consequences...

Re: "The Choking Game" And I thought drugs were a danger to my teens

I've heard of people doing things like this, various ways to try & make each other pass out, or get to that point & bring them back just in time. Even though this isn't an actual drug, its seemingly another way for people to get 'high'. I think its ridiculous. Thanks for making us aware of this, well written. *

Scary stuff
I saw this on jackass and that really disturbed me but they thought it was funny and so do many others. Unfortunately there are many other disturbing things they do here and my kids have seen all the movies and love these guys but I think they are terrible role models but heaps of teenagers get ideas from these guys. If you haven't  seen any of the movies they are an eye opener!

When I was at school they boys in my plastics class would do this making each other faint.. You know I never thought anything of it.. They would do some kind of hugging thing or push on that persons chest and down they would go... Just faint...

At the time I just thought it was a stupid thing that the boys were doing.  Well now I know it was a really stupid thing...

Not so new, actually

Just a little comment to let you know that actually this game exists for quite a while. The first time I've seen kids do that I was about...9!! I'm 25 now so this game has been around some time already. Fortunately, my mum also saw kids as they were pressing hard on their throat with their thumb. She used to be a nurse and she told them all the dangers of such a game in a very calm way. She also explained everything to my brother, my sister and I when we came back home and she must have found the right words, 'cause we've never even been tempted to have a go.

The only piece of advice I could give here is to try to talk to them very calmly and not be afraid of telling them what happens when you 'lose' the game. That what we've been told and it worked very well for us.
And I'm thinking, if your kids have a big sister/brother or an aunt/uncle they like very much and are often with, it might be a good idea to let them talk to them about this 'game' (I know my sister listened better to adults who were not my parents).

Too True and they will only get help when they think they have had enough also. I have seen a few of my old friends turn into heroin addicts and i will never talk with them again. They have done unspeakable things to my family and there own. I cant offer any advice on this subject because i have seen it but i've never been them, i wouldn't ever touch drugs, the only thing i can advice for this is to look around your local area for a family drug councilling service even if the child doesn't participate it will help guide you into where ever this child goes. Meaning When they hit the wall you'll know what to do. Apparently there are annonamus drug help phone lines around now also. get help now before your child ends up in the same place as many before him/her. Hopefully they are just doing it for fun and they decide it isn't right for them before it is to late, drugs are killers, and i wish you good luck because this child is going to take you on the biggest roller coaster ride ever. He will be so unpredictable and he will try anything to get his hands on a little cash to get his next bit of what ever substance. Lock all your valuables away there are places they can sell these and believe me they will. Sorry. Truely i am...

Things to look out for hey

What would I do without the likes of you to inform me on these things? I have one child and she is only 3 so these are things that are a long way off for me, but it still pays to be informed. I have said all along that "education is the key to everything".  Although I never tried smoking, that's the worst thing any of my friends ever did.  If sneaking a ciggy every so often was the worst thing they could have done then I was in with some good friends. Also I went to a Catholic school in a small town which helps matters alot. Even if we tried anything like this it would get back to our parents because everyone knew everyone.  I'm in a city now with my daughter so I have the worry that she doesn't have the small community to watch over her like I had.  Kids really need to wrapped in cotton wool to keep them safe don't they?

Thanks Angie, you are a very in tune and informed woman.  You pay lots of attention to what your kids are up to and always do your best to protect them and keep them safe even if that is only to inform them of the possible dangers and let them then make their own decisions.  Well done.

chocking game

omg man they must get stupider the older they get... i cant say that there was anything like this when i went to school, we sneeked the odd drink but that was it... mind you i was in a good croud of kids (nerds hehehe) wow it's so hard to believe that anyone could be that stupid... what makes them do it, i mean they must be on somthing else that makes them think that this is ok and fun??? it's attempted murder really, sure the intent is different but that's exactly what it is... omg omg omg this totally out there. i am so glad that logan will have limited exposure to this type of behaviour because of homeschooling, he'll only have to deal with it for the last two years of highschool thankfully. and by then hopefully he is smart enough to see how stupid it is stii can't protect 'em forever.

omg kiall just told me about a thing they used to do at school because it was 'cool', you bend down with head between knees and hyperventilate for about 30 sec to a minute and stand up straight back to a wall and a friend would push firmly aginst chest for 2-3 sec and catch you as you collapse/pass out you wake 30 odd sec later with a similar high. sounds like a similar thing. personally i thought kiall would have known better but there you go even the smart ones can be dumb when there's peer pressure involved. guess i better read up on all this stuff...

:)'s for you angie, another great article.
