Writing Advice

HarrisonsMommy by HarrisonsMommy Talking Back(March 2007) (rank 56th)

Minti is a wonderful site and allows others to share their wealth of knowledge.  Having access to this information is invaluable to those searching for it.  But, when writing advice, there are some common and courteous things you should do.

  • Write in paragraphs.
  • Write in
Capital letter and lowercase letters.  WRITING IN ALL CAPS IS NOT GOOD.
  • Don't write your whole advice in bold.  Only bold those items you particularly want to draw attention to.
  • Try to spell correctly.  I don't know how to spell check on Minti but I believe I read it can be done.
  • If writing in advice, give advice.  Don't just share stories or ask questions.  If you are sharing a story, try to include your intended advice at the end of your story.  It might be clear to you what you are trying to say but not to those who are reading your advice.

Now, I am in no means an expert on writing or writing advice, these are just a few suggestions to make reading your advice a bit easier on the eye.  We all want to get the information that is out there the quickest and easiest way possible.

Re: Writing Advice

Hi,

Thanks for writing this :) I am new to Minti and am still getting used to how to do everything, but am really enjoying being a part of such a fun online community.

Some times when I write advice or answer questions, I put it in a readable format and then it just all jumbles together when I publish it. Does anyone have advice about that?

Again, thanks- articles like this make it easier to fit in and not offend anyone accidentally.

Tanya :)

Re: Writing Advice
Great points!  You can also use the Mozilla Firefox browser.  It has a spell check built in.

Re: Writing Advice

Great advice here! It would also be great for many of us to also apply this to comments too.

Take Care,

Re: Writing Advice

That is a really good point, hadn't thought about the same principles being applied to comments but I totally agree.  Thanks for your comments!

Thanks for making some very valid points, I for one love reading the articles, especially when the grammar and punctuation is correct

Good points

I’ve read a couple of articles on here which have been hard to read. One was about 30lines long and no punctuation whatsoever! It was hard to follow. And yes its important if you are telling a story or sharing an experience, to include what your advice is at the end. I have tried to be conscious of doing this with my advice when sharing an experience/story. Thanks for pointing these things out!

Yes, it is easier to read something that is well set out.  There are quite a few related articles too - I am laying off writing anything until I have had time to have a good look at them.

It is true, we have Q&A, blog & lounges for general stuff... If your advice is in regard to a story or an experience that happened to you, that is excellent - however it does need to contain a lesson, or finish with an ending that is advice in some way.

I hope that people keep writing lots of advice, there doesn't seem to have been much lately.

Totally Agree
There is nothing worse than trying to read advice that is in one big block instead of broken into paragraphs.
All in capitals is also annoying.
If you aren't a good speller, then type into Word first so that you can do a spell check and then copy and paste it into Minti.

Not to mention that when you type in capitals, it is considered offensive because you are shouting in net etiquette.
