Treatment for Chickenpox

janicepovey by janicepovey Talking Back(April 2007) (rank 32nd)

What is the treatment?

* The patient should rest in bed or move around quietly until feeling well

* Give paracetamol for fever. (Avoid giving aspirin to children)

* Daub calamine or a similar soothing lotion to relieve itching, although the itch is usually not severe in children.

* Avoid scratching, clean and cut fingernails of children. Put on cotton mittens if necessary.

*Keep the diet simple. Drink ample fluids, including orange juice and lemonade.

* Daily bathing is avisable, with sodium bicarbonate added (half a cup to the bath water) or with Pinetarsol liquid or soap. Pat dry with a clean towel; do not rub.

* Antihistamines are sometimes used if itch is severe.

Use of antiviral drugs

These are usually reserved for adolescents and adults with a severe eruption and should be  started during the first 3 days of the rash (preferably day 1 ). In general, they are not used in the very young and in those who are not ill or have very few pocks.

Vaccination

A vaccine against chickenpox is now available, and is usually given after 12 months of  age in children. Ask your doctor for more information.

For me i found these helped; Bathed in Pinearsol or the good old salt water bath,

Pine Tar (lotion with menthol) to rub on sores,

Antihistamines for adults Phenergan (not for children) they also helped with getting some sleep,

Antihistamines for children over 12 years old Telfast.

I feel for any child who gets chickenpox, but i do believe a Mum's love and tender care you can't beat.

Chickenpox
All four of mine have had this at really varying degrees of severity
From the odd spot and feeling lousy, right up to being sprinkled in spots and feeling lousy
although one of mine had loads of spots and felt fine
I used calamine lotion on mine
Also Piriton syrup orally to relieve the itching

CHICKENPOX

Last year, I had all my 4 kids with chickenpox in a period of a month or so. The chemist informed me calamine lotion is not really used that much anymore, and a new gel called Solosite is used more these days. This gel reduces scarring, soothes and hydrates the sore! Hope this helps!

Adult Chickenpox
I had chicken pox just over a yer ago.. Worst 3 weeks of my life!!!!  I found they felt 100 times worse when I was hot, so cool face washers were a godsend..  And I took cold and flu tablets with antihistamines.. Took the swelling down and allowed me to rest (not sleep, but rest lol) :)

Adult Chickenpox

Your so right, i agree it has been the worst two weeks of my life, and they do say in adults only have influenza- like illness. I have found the night time is the worse, no sleep, ripping skin off and in all feel awful. I have also ended up with an infection in my eye through one of the pocks near my temple which seeped into my eye causing the infection not nice lol!

Thanks for your thoughts, Janice

Adult Chickenpox
I had flu like symptoms for a week or so before I got my first spot.. I actually went to the docs cos dh was sick of me being so tired.. They werent too sure what was wrong and just thought it was a flu kinda virus.. Didnt think chicken pox cox my boy had been over it for fortnight and we had kinda moved on IYKWIM.. then I got two spots one day.. then 2 days later I was literally covered in spots.. all through my mouth and ears aswell.. make eating and drinking so hard.. I couldnt sit back or lay down for 2 weeks cos it hurt so much..  Only sleep I had was while sitting up on the floor so i coulnt accidently lean on anything.. Thats so hard to do.. was 3 weeks from the first spot before I felt ok enough to leave the house.. Mind you, in that time my girl got it, and was over it completely in 5 days.. Boy was I jealous LOL Thats terrible about your eye infection!!!  I had one on my face become infected near my eye brow, but wasnt any sorer than any other spot but has left a hole there.. and my girl kept picking one on her wrist which became badly infected..

Other ideas

My hubby also had what you had, and i bathed him in collodial oatmeal, which you can get from chemists or health food stores.

Also try pure rosehip oil when the scabs start to form, to help reduce scarring.

Great advice, very consice, thanks.
