The very sad death of a 3 year old

OzBinky by OzBinky Young Parent(April 2007) (rank 13th)
This is only a very short piece of advice as I think the article itself says enough as does the story itself.

A three-year-old boy died around 2:30pm today, 5th April, after being accidently strangled by the strap of his bike helmet. Apparently after he had tried to climb through a window while wearing the helmet and became lodged between the window and the wall next to it.  (original story can be read here)

It was a tragedy that no one would have been able to foresee, however, it is one that has now impacted the lives of many, if not all, parents and one which will make us a little more aware of how even the things we encourage our children to use for obvious safety reasons - can be dangerous in the wrong circumstances.

This is a sad and tragic story - but by being aware of it we may be able to prevent anything like this from happening to our children.

Have a safe and wonderful Easter

Re: The very sad death of a 3 year old

My three year old refuses to wear his helmet unless he is riding his bike. Which now I am quite happy about. Thanks for the info.

tragic

this made me feel sick... my daughter is three and i'm always making her wear her helmet even though she's still only tall enough for a trike!!

she's always telling me that she doesn't like the strap because it's near her neck...

i think that it's got to be a matter of balance with safety isssues, i just feel so sorry for the parents of this child, it's so tragic beyond belief...

we must all make the most of our children, they are such precious gifts that we have been blessed with....

love to all and all take care.  xxxx

hooded sweaters...
I like these for me, and my son has a couple. But he never wears them to day care, or while I know he is going to be climbing on things... Mostly if we go outside on a cold day...  And as we also have a playful puppy I am afraid that he could grab hold of it like any kid could causing damage to the wind pipe if pulled hard enough....

Many years ago my god mother lost her son to a hooded sweater (jumper) he was climbing from one tree to another...  He ended up hanging himself by accident when the hood got stuck on a branch...   I can't remember the full story, as it was years ago but that bit has stuck with me for ever... Kids love to grab things when they play so just watch they don't grab the hoods....

so sad
man thats a wake up logan has a scooter and wheres his helmet half the day because he on it for that long...it has even stoped his head from having a busted skull because he had it on when he ran outside once and fell down the two stairs we have landing top of his head/helmet first on the paving. but this just goes to show ya that anything can be dangerous and the litlies need to be watched as often as humanly possible because they can get into all kinds of dangerous situations... thanks for this article OB...

A tragic loss of life
Stories like this are tragic.  My heart goes out to the family of the toddler, and to all others who have lost a child.  You're right, it's something that could never have been foreseen.  My house is like a fortress with all the security ensuring my child cannot get outside.  While I don't lock her in, I do only let her out when I am outside with her.  I think people need to take more care with their children they are such precious little beings who are not capable of  seeing the dangerous side of what they do as they cannot understand how final death is or even that what they do could lead to death.  Great article, thank you for informing us.

A tragic loss of life
The sad twist in all of this is that Mum had obviously installed 'safety first' in her house, her son was after all wearing his helmet to ride....

It is very sad....

Thanks for your comments

So sad
Hi
2 three year old youngsters die in a matter of hours
Don't parents watch their kids no more
People call a friend of mine paranoid as she always wants to know where her toddlers are at ALL times.
It only takes a few seconds for it to be too late
Pray for strength for the families.
Luv Deb

So sad
I know what you're saying - mind you - none of us can be there 24/7 for our children. There are times when they slip away from right under your nose.

This could have happened a thousand and one ways. He could have been playing in his bedroom and climbed up on a wardrobe and it still could have happened. Its just so sad....

what a sad tragedy
Hey sweetie, Ya know - I just watched this on the news about 15 minutes ago and they showed the footage of the ambo's taking the child away, parent crying - other siblings crying...and ya know something - I have mixed emotions about what I saw....

It made me aware, therefore its a good thing - but oh my God, does the media have to be so invasive? This is a grieving family - I wouldn't want images of the ambo's taking my child away - knowing that in fact he had already died.....but then you have that "being aware" thing....

I dunno, I am little ify on this one...mainly because when my nephew died in a terrible car accident they filmed him laying on the ground. He was already gone and when I saw that news footage it ripped my heart apart. I can only imagine how it made my sister feel at the time.....so there is a personal thing where you feel like your pain has been made public and just for the sake of having something else to say in the news...

My heart goes out to this family - it is so tragic....

Take care cazza

Sadly OB, the media have police scanners and pick up on the stories quite quickly, but you are right no family would want their loved one being filmed.

what a sad tragedy
Hi
I hear what you say. I have the news paper clipping from the day my brother died.
What is said from the media is so horrifying it is not even worth contemplating.
Stuff that we really did not need to know but they throw it in our faces.
Why should they care...it's news after all isn't it
Skyhooks wrote a song called "Horror Movie"
The lyrics are cut and pasted of a Skyhooks site

Watch a horror movie right there on my TV
Horror movie right there on my TV
Horror movie right there on my TV
Shockin' me right outa my brain

Not the lyrics to "HORROR MOVIE" ?, Please report that below. It's bound to get ya in
Get right under your skin
Hit you right on the chin - oh yeah
It's bound to be a thriller
It's bound to be a chiller
It's bound to be a killer - oh yeah

Is this song NOT from SKYHOOKS: THE COLLECTION (1998) ? Would you report that? The planes are a-crashin
The cars are a-smashin
The cops are a-bashin - oh yeah
The kids are a-fightin
The fires are a-lightin
The dogs are a-bitin - oh yeah

If you can not find the lyrics you want, You may want to request them. You think it's just a movie on silver screen
And they're all actors and fake old scenes
Maybe you don't care who's gonna lose or win
Listen to this and I'll tell you somethin'

Horror movie right there on my TV
Horror movie and it's blown a fuse
Horror movie, it's the six-thirty news

To add comments to "SKYHOOKS", Go to the lyrics listing page The public's waitin
For the killin and the hatin
Switch on the station - oh yeah
They do a lotta sellin
Between the firin and the yellin
And you believe in what they're tellin - oh yeah
And this is why they report it
Not a actual horror movie but the nightly news.....
Makes you cry don't it
Luv Deb
