Children can benefit from the relationship they share with a pet.............
BUT it’s not uncommon for pets to transmit infections, especially to children. It is important to educate your self on how to protect your children from these infections..........
It is important to choose your pet well. Preferably a healthy animal that is purchased from a reputable breeder, shelter or store.......
Be careful not to take in strays or sick pets they stand a bigger chance of carrying more infections and there is more risk they may make you and your family sick.
If you decide to purchase an abused or neglected animal be very cautious it is not an aggressive animal, never risk the wellbeing of your family.....
You must also consider the health and age of your children before bringing a pet into your home.
Avoiding pet to person diseases;
n Always wash hands
n Avoid kissing your pet
n Avoid sharing food with your pet
n Keep your pet’s living area clean of waste
n Do not allow pets in the kitchen
n Do not touch animals waste products do not let children play in uncovered sand boxes
n Pregnant women should not clean out cats litter box. Soiled cat litter can cause a disease called toxoplasmosis, this can cause defects in an unborn child
n Children under 5 years old should not be allowed to play with reptiles. Reptiles carry the salmonella virus
Animals carry lots of germs in their mouth, the germs exist in the saliva, and it is important to realise that a lick can transmit a disease.....
Things that can be done to keep your pet and your family safe;
n Have your pet wormed and vaccinated regularly
n Control fleas and ticks
n Regularly feed your pet nutritious food and plenty of water
n Avoid feeding your pet raw meat
House pets such as dogs, cats, birds and reptiles can carry diseases and parasites that can make people sick. Most pet to people diseases can be avoided if you follow a few common sense rules..............
