Safety with pets...

hermy by hermy Talking Back(April 2007) (rank 44th)

Children can benefit from the relationship they share with a pet.............

       BUT it’s not uncommon for pets to transmit infections, especially to children. It is important to educate your self on how to protect your children from these infections..........

      It is important to choose your pet well. Preferably a healthy animal that is purchased from a reputable breeder, shelter or store.......

       Be careful not to take in strays or sick pets they stand a bigger chance of carrying more infections and there is more risk they may make you and your family sick.

       If you decide to purchase an abused or neglected animal be very cautious it is not an aggressive animal, never risk the wellbeing of your family.....

      You must also consider the health and age of your children before bringing a pet into your home.

         Avoiding pet to person diseases;

n      Always wash hands

n      Avoid kissing your pet

n      Avoid sharing food with your pet

n      Keep your pet’s living area clean of waste

n      Do not allow pets in the kitchen

n      Do not touch animals waste products do not let children play in uncovered sand boxes

n      Pregnant women should not clean out cats litter box. Soiled cat litter can cause a disease called toxoplasmosis, this can cause defects in an unborn child

n      Children under 5 years old should not be allowed to play with reptiles. Reptiles carry the salmonella virus

            Animals carry lots of germs in their mouth, the germs exist in the saliva, and it is important to realise that a lick can transmit a disease.....

           Things that can be done to keep your pet and your family safe;

n      Have your pet wormed and vaccinated regularly

n      Control fleas and ticks

n      Regularly feed your pet nutritious food and plenty of water

n      Avoid feeding your pet raw meat

            House pets such as dogs, cats, birds and reptiles can carry diseases and parasites that can make people sick. Most pet to people diseases can be avoided if you follow a few common sense rules..............

            I hope this helps...........

Just have to tell you my pet miracle. Our 10 wk old mim foxie pup went missing Fri morn and by  this morn I thought he was gone. Tonight when we got home he was back. What is amazing is we live in the country on terrain that is very harsh and there are snakes and dingos etc. So this tough little man survived 24hrs in the bush YAY!!!!!!!

Pet safety!
My oldest son has Asthma as well as other Allergies to pollen and dust etc,  these allergies didn't present themselves until he turned 3 and we also have a small dog who at that stage we had had for 5 years. Unfortunately we also found out that he is allergic to her saliva so that if she licks him he comes out in hives. This was very hard for both my son and our dog as they both just adore each other. My son who is now 6 has learnt to not let our dog lick / kiss him on the face, as the face seems to be the only place it effects him. Getting rid of our dog was never an option as she is part of our family, we have instead educated ourselves and our son on how to be careful, we are just lucky is not a life threatening situation as then we would have not thought twice as a child's safety is the most important thing.

Pet safety!
how hard that would be....your so right when yousay the pet is part of the family and they are just another member.......its  great how you have made sure to educate yourself on what to do,that is the most important thing and thats all it takes.....all this things can be prevented as long as you are educated at the fact that pets carry a lot of germs......iam glad to hear that your son is also aware and makes sure not to let the dog kiss him, that is great......thank you for your comment..........
