Reading to your child - Is it just a book?

Ngairi by Ngairi Talking Back(April 2007) (rank 38th)

When a lot of parents think of reading with their child, they immediately think of sitting down together, opening a book and reading a story. This is absolutely fantastic, but in the years that I have worked with children at school, a lot do not understand that there are many

other forms of reading.

When you go out for a drive in the car, do you 'read' the highway signs, or the traffic signs? What about shop front signs? These are all forms of reading and a good game to play in the car or even while going for a walk in town, is to look for a certain word or letter if they are just starting off. I know we all like to give our kids the best start we can in their education.

Let your children see you reading books and magazines for enjoyment. It need not be a chore. Show them that Mums AND Dads read. Also share the reading with your child. If they ask to see what you are reading, let them have a go or read a bit to them. They might not understand it, but read anyway.

Do you discuss pictures that you may see, either in books, magazines, road billboards, etc. Let them have a go at what they think may be happening in the picture. What are the people thinking? What might they be saying? This all helps with conversation and comprehension skills. Helps them work out picture clues when they start reading.

Read books with expression. Vary levels of your voice from soft to loud, but never too scary. This keeps the kids interested and reading is not such a chore.

Join your local library. Borrow books together. Most council libraries have kids library activities so check them out. I know my local library has Children's storytime every Wednesday and Sunday.

A few points to remember:

  • Make reading a daily occurence.
  • Mum and Dad can read to your child.
  • Turn off the TV and other distractions.
  • Read with expression.
  • Talk about pictures.
  • Look for words everywhere.
  • Join your local library.

But most of all: Remember that just as sport is great exercise for your body, reading exercises your mind.

So open a book and have some fun.

Dr. Seuss is a children's author who wrote such classics as Fox in Socks, Green Eggs and Ham, and possibly the most famous one, and one that became a Jim Carry movie, is Cat in the Hat, followed on by The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.  Hop On Pop and Dr. Seuss's ABC were the ones we started with, but Green Eggs and Ham and Fox in Socks are the favourites now.

Re: Reading to your child - Is it just a book?

Dr Seuss was a children's author, who wrote rhyming stories with a lesson underneath. Most of his young people books, contain mainly little words that rhyme.

Some of the quotes below are from his books and have a little lesson in each

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who matter don't mind, and those that mind, don't matter."

Don't give up. I believe in you all. A person's a person no matter how small.

Think left and thing right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try

What a fantastic article!!!!

I love to read to my boys and they love it too because I give all the characters different voices and I have fun with it.  When I work, the kids love me to read the stories beacuse I'm the only one who does that.  We are a reading family and i love that!!

It is good to see those who read and you can certainly tell those children who have been introduced to reading early. Thanks for reading. Leisa

What was it Homer Simpson said?? "It's not what you read it's all in the way you say it... "

My son does not understand, but he knows what a cow is, he knows what a cat or frog is.. And eventually he will understand the words soon too.. :)

Re: Reading to your child - Is it just a book?
great advise and my kids love reading and always ask questions when we are out and i love answering them as how they going to learn if we dont teach them... I feel that teaching starts at home and helps the teachers when our kids start school, and also i have had the teachers say to me that its great how i encourage my children and they wish there were more parents like me,....

I agree with you. When the bigger kids were at Primary school, I actually trained to be a Support-a-Reader tutor where the kids have a chance to read one on one with someone. It was so worthwhile. Leisa

My chloe is 4 and our school this year has introduced a reading program where the kids come and read to her when she is at playgroup and also on tuesday afternoons we attend the school library and she gets read too, and gets a nursery  rythme card to go home with...

Its a great set up........
