fun inexpensive birthday gift - tent

lindterbean by lindterbean Young Parent(June 2006) (rank 89th)
We had a blast with this one -

We went to IKEA and bought a pop-up play tent - $7.99
and wooden camp stool - $3.99
cut a lake out of blue vinyl, no need to hem - $2.99 at fabric store
photocopied
and enlarged clip art fish illustrations and mounted them to poster board (inverses also so they are two-sided) - free at the office
attached paper clips to their mouths - free at the office
bought cheap plastic child's fishing poles (2) at WalMart - $10.00
attached magnets where the hooks go - stolen from refrigerator
rolled newspapers into logs with tape at the ends to hold them tight - from recycling bin
paper plates, cups and plastic silverware - latest fast food run
silk flowers for effect - $2.00 from hobby store
bag to store it all in - leftover vinyl

The look on their faces when they saw they had their own indoor campground complete with magnetic fishing game, wooden picnic table and tent. . . priceless

(not to mention we had no trouble getting them to go to bed when we let them sleep in the tent or eat at the picnic table, and everything including the camp stool and lake folded up neatly for storage in the closet)

How do you keep coming up with this stuff...

This sounds like way to much fun... :)   I think my son when he gets older and I don't fear him eating the paper clips I think I'll give this ago.. Oh I will have fun with this.. And Camille I am sure will have fun helping me make it.. And dad will have fun teaching him out to fish.. Fun for all....

Thanks...

Fantastic Idea
I love this idea!  The kids must have just loved it!  I've done a similar activity with fish and magnets.  It is great for eye-hand coordination.  For those who don't want the expense of buying fishing poles, you can make your own using a paint stick (free!), yarn and a magnet.  Great tip :)
