When Did You Feel Like a Parent?

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(June 2006) (rank 1st)

Today's Tip - If you haven't had that "I'm a parent" moment yet...you will

Up until now, I hadn't really felt like a dad. Not when I marked down on registration forms that there was a child in my household. Not when people wished me a happy first

fathers day. I was beginning to think it would be this gradual thing that sort of came over me after a year or so.

But today was the day that we started our son on solid foods. I found myself at work getting all excited over going to the grocery store, buying some rice cereal and then setting up the video camera to videotape our son's first foray into solid foods. And that's when it hit me that I was responsible for nurturing another life. I was looking forward to seeing him grow and accomplishing things in life. The only thing I wanted to do tonight was to make sure I was around to feed my son with my wife. Tonight was the night I finally felt like a father. If it hasn't happened to you yet, don't worry. You'll have your moment.

My moment
I felt the expected love for my son when he moved whilst pregnant, nestled into me after the birth and now every time he grins at me but one of the first times I thought that I was finally responsible for someone else was when I was sick. Despite a runny nose, streaming eyes and the usual cold symptoms, I couldn't tuck up in bed and recover but had someone else depending on me! And his smiles made me feel heaps better!

Well done!
I'm really pleased for you. For me, with both my boys, I felt it when they started moving when I was pregnant - but thats the good bit of being the woman. My husband took longer, but when he did, he really did!

when did you feel like a parent?

i agree with you. my husband, i dont think he feels like a father yet. but i know it will come to him. i know he feels bad for not being there every day, or night beause he is always working out of town. hes maybe home 4 days a month.. a month!!!! crazy huh? but it's his job and that's how he make's his money, so we have to do what we have to do right? it must of been nice to be around your son when you were feeding him. i love it when my husband feeds our daughter, but lately she's only been feeding for me. i think it's because she's used to me feeding her. so whenever my husband does finally come home from work, i try to get him to feed her, so that she gets used to him doing it. i know she loves her daddy though, big smiles as soon as he comes in the door and talks to her. its' great!!

we're going to BC next weekend, so there will be lot's of time for him to spend with our daughter!
