May have a laxative effect.

MumKim by MumKim Young Parent(April 2007) (rank 15th)

Generic or no name brand products are often just as good as the real thing only cheaper. Lately here in Australia we have been encouraged to buy generic brand drugs on prescriptions.  We are told that they are just the same as the big name brands only cheaper.

I

thought this applied to baby paracetamol. Instead of buying the more expensive ‘Panadol’ brand I bought the cheaper ‘Chemists Own’ version. I checked that the base drug of paracetamol was the same and asked the pharmacy assistant if the two products were the same. I was assured that they were.

THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!

‘Chemists Own’ brand contains sorbitol which according to the packet (if you read the small print on the side) “may have a laxative effect or cause diarrhea”.

I gave my fifteen week old daughter her first ever dose of ‘Chemists Own’ paracetamol last Sunday evening. The next day we had ‘bum blowouts’ like you wouldn’t believe. Trust me – my daughter really doesn’t need a laxative!

I have since spoken to the pharmacist and checked the “Panadol” brand of baby paracetamol. It does not contain sorbitol. I know which one I will be buying next time.

I mentioned this to my brother and he told me that they have to make sure that they buy the children’s paracetamol that is colour free (why does it need to be coloured?) or his daughter reacts badly. Yet another thing to watch out for.

i use nurofen for children
colour free, sorbitol free, and it tastes way better than panadol, which tastes like crushed up panadol with a flavour mixed in lol :)

they also make infant drops, you should try it :)

Own brand as apposed to branded
It is more than just some of the exipients (added products) that my differ.  There may be as much as a 10% variance in active product in the generic versions.  Generally this doesn't have much of an effect, except if you have something like epilepsy, where that 10% can make the difference between having a seizure or not!  It is therefore always vital that with anti epilepsy medication, you always use the same medication - be it branded or generic.  The problem is that the generic products are not always sourced from the same companies so are not as reliable as the branded version.  Besides,  the company that branded the product had to do all the development of the product - they now what they are doing.  If I gave the same cake recipe to 2 different cooks, I bet I would get two different cakes!

Interesting that you mention this. My husband had some extra symptoms that appeared when he changed to a generic brand of lamical and then disappeared when he got his old brand back. That was before he cut his lamical out all together. He had surgery 15 months ago and it has gone so well he has totally cut his kepra and lamictal and has significantly reduced his tegratol.

Hmm thats something I didnt know. I always buy baby dymadon. Smaller dose, bigger bottle and only $4.95 at my chemist compared to the more expensive panadol
