Last week the child health nurse asked a small group of us what would be our number one tip for new parents. At the time I said “watch a breast feeding video before you have your baby”. It certainly would have helped me. The how to breast feed video tape

at the hospital I had my daughter at was broken so I had to make do with pamphlets and demonstrations and feeling really silly.
Today if asked the same question my answer would be “GET A ROCKING CHAIR”. A very kind friend has lent us a rocking chair. Thank goodness!
My 15 week old daughter has just been screaming again and I have given her a third dose (according to the directions) of the colic medicine the pharmacist recommended yesterday.
I find it very distressing when she screams and after I have tried feeding her, checked her nappy and given her medication (when appropriate) there is not a lot else I can do.
Sitting in the rocking chair calms us both down. I have found the best way for me to deal with her screaming (she screams so loud my ears ring) is to hold her and sit in the rocking chair singing baby songs or chanting nursery rhymes quietly. Often it also puts her to sleep and it certainly calms me down too.
Sometimes if I think she is tired and needs a nap I close the curtains so the room is dark and sit in the rocking chair with her either feeding her or just cuddling her while we rock gently. Usually this has the effect of getting her to sleep.
I love my rocking chair!
