A Love of Literacy

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(April 2007) (rank 1st)
Book lovers????

Why do we always have a mental picture of someone boring???

Why is it ok to sit for hours looking at  a TV or Video screen lost in that world

But its "uncool" to be
lost in a book

I want my children to enjoy books

I would love my children to get as lost in books as they do in the big screen!

I am a book lover
Right now I am into books that delve into the workings of the mind I guess that is just where I am at the moment
When someone has made you believe you have lost their mind
Studying the works of the mind comes pretty naturally

My 9 year old is the one who has most taken after me
He is a great lover of Charles Dickens
Not exactly what you would expect from a 9 year old but he really enjoys these Classic Novels. His favourite books are Oliver Twist, Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations.
Personally I think its wonderful that he gets such a lot of pleasure from reading, he has a bright and curious mind and also gets a thrill from writing his own stories too, Who knows one day in the future, you may even be reading something by him!!!!

How to teach your child to love Books
For a start, force is not going to cut it here
You cannot make your child develop a love of reading
You can however encourage your child to respect books and the stories they hold

Its the way you tell the Story
I have read books to my children from the get go, I am not ashamed or embarrassed that I have a variety of voices that I can read it for role play purposes.
Encourage reading from a very early age
Make stories a part of their routine
Don't read in a bland voice, add dialects and characters by the changes in your voice
With picture books use the pictures as you read to encourage their imagination

Make them Wait
As my children got older, I used to find an exciting part of the story to finish it
I wouldn't give in to any bribes or threats, but I would put the book away for the next evening
By doing this I am encouraging them to look forward to the next part and look forward to story time in general

Involve their own Imagination
Sometimes before turning the page, I ask them what they think is going to happen, we will discuss the possibilities of what will happen next..... It adds to their enjoyment especially if they are the ones who guessed correctly.

Don't Push a "Dull" Book
By a "Dull" book, I mean dull to your child. Sometimes you can find a book that will keep 19 out of 20 children enthralled but there may be that one child that switches off. If you feel the story is not working or they are not enjoying it then stop reading the book and find another one that appeals better to your child.

Join a Library!
Libraries are great for choosing books and getting a regular selection all for free
There is also generally nice little children areas in libraries so if you are in town and your child needs a break, go to a library, read them a story and they will be refreshed again.

Wouldn't it be great to see more children taking pleasure from a Book!

Local Libraries

In the UK local libraries often do workshops, reading sessions, rhyme-times, and various other activities throughout the year for younger children.  In the holidays the local authority will also include the libraries in random activities some of which will be based at the library, and there will usually be a theme for the year, and if so many books are read that summer a medal and certificate will be awarded.

I love reading - you may say that I am an addict.  So this is something that we have always done at home, walking down the street and so on.  These days E writes me the most lovely letters of poetry, love and best wishes for whatever we are doing that day.

In the local school there was a 'reading evening' when the parents were invited to the schoolt o be educated about how to help their children learn the alphabet, how to read and how to spell.  Our school also provided us with an information pack (perfect as I was unable to get childcare and would have missed out otherwise!) that included all the phonic sounds with the actions that the chlidren are taught in school these days to help them sound out the letters.  We have great fun at home with this because when E is at church and writing things if she cant remember how to spell it I can mime the action to her....what fun!
Peace

Love Reading
Great advice, I love reading, and definitely don't get enough time reading to myself (lol) but am so amazed how my little kidz love getting their books out to read or just look at the pictures, Icesis who is only 2 loves reading my cook books, the colourful pictures really interest her. We have just implemented a 1 hour reading time at our place, instead of watching tv, it is a big hit amongst the smaller children.

A Love of Literacy
this is great advice nell......i have always loved books to, have introduced books to all my children at an early age....not to good at the different voices, but i do try.....at the moment i have to be a little strict on ryan because he has started distroying his books, so now his is only allowed to have them when i am ready to read....hopefully this will help him learn that he has to look after his books......and i tell you they have heaps....thanks for your great advice .....regards Sandra xxxx

Books!

I love books, any sort of book will do...but i didn't up until about 6 years ago. I don't know what made me start to read but once i started i couldn't stop. I would read a book in 1-2 days at the most and i had to then start a new one. I just love to read!!

I read a story to my boys every night before they go to bed and my oldest son borrows 2 books from his school library every week as well as his school readers. They love story time and fight over what book to read and who's book i read first. My oldest is now reading books that i used to read to him when he was younger!!

Reading is important!
Reading to me is really important..... it helps to keep the mind active and also helps you to be able to comprehend.....linked to cognitive way of the world....
When i was just a wee little kid my mum and dad would sit with me for hours on end teaching me to read several types of books as well as newspapers....and by the time i was 3 1/2 i was reading the newspapers on my own with very few mistakes and was also reading road signs etc etc!
I believe that the more time you can spend with your children in doing these things, the better!
Great article Helen, keep up the good work....
P.S.....i read to my daughter..... though i don't read much to myself anymore! And our television isn't always on either....i find it boring alot of the time!

bookhead here
Great article helen!!!! I am a fellow bookhead, grew up reading and can't stop it. Books and music are my sources of escapism and my little one is following in my footsteps. You'll often find my nose in a book (probably a little too often) and gracie has a love of books too. I find that words are a powerful tool and when used right, can change someone's way of thinking or to the point of changing their lives. Bookheads unite!!!

I used to read all the time,my two year old loves books and is always asking me to read one ,, as ive been teaching him to read words this also has made it easy , i start to read and then stop and point to a word that he knows and ask him what it is and he tells me that word with a huge smile on his face ,we have done this everyday , it wont be long till he will read the whole book back to me as he also loves to make the animals noises in the farm books , readings soo good for the mind and imagination and development of your child ,,

great advice on how to get your children intrested in reading nell.

I think half the time we do the funny faces and voices just cos we're fed up reading the same story over and over!!
Its great when they can read themselves, they are so proud
