Being nappy/diaper free |

I have written a few articles on minti about cloth nappies (diapers) and how they work.
There seems to be a cloth v disposable debate. How about no nappy?
When I was researching the idea of using modern cloth on my 8mth old son, I came across
some very interesting information on the idea of not using nappies at all or at least not all the time. This is known as elimination communication or Infant hygiene.
This goes against the belief that babies are born without the muscle control especially of the bladder and the bowel. In some countries such as China nappies are not common at all.
So what is elimination communication? I have read that babies at birth can wee or eliminate on a potty. This requires bonding and understanding of your baby - knowing when they need to go and the use of cues.
I am a believer that the best nappy is no nappy. When possible my bub has no nappy on at home or in the backyard. It allows him awareness of his body. I haven't caught his wees or poos but to be honest I haven't been committed to try. The best thing of being nappy free is it allows bub's bottom to breathe and be free from urine and faeces against his skin - the best prevention of nappy rash.
So whether you use cloth or disposables, try and have time without nappy. It can be helpful in many ways.
