How to Find Fulfillment and Be Content

Vicki by Vicki Speaking(April 2007) (rank 500+)
Our family had the most spectacular New York City weekend. We were in the parks all day; sopping up the glorious weather and loving the Earth! (It was a most appropriate Earth Day Day celebration)

When my oldest,Fischer was born, all my family and friends assumed we’d immediately
move home to settle down in Texas. After all, raising kids and New York City do not naturally fit together. To most, New York is the definition of a Concrete Jungle.

New York City and kids has proven to be a fantastic fit! The City has some of the most beautiful, innovative parks (and playgrounds) I’ve ever visited.

This weekend, we were hiking up the rocks in a new part of Central Park, the children’s glade. A park designed by Peter Jay Sharp to be a ‘natural playground’…absent are the traditional swings, jungle gyms, etc. Instead, they replaced play equipment with rock formations, trees and bark pathways. Our kids spent a day in the glades:
  • dancing barefoot to the music of Laurie Berkner
  • discovering giant turtles at the base of a delightful waterfall
  • watching ducks dip and duck in a pond
  • picnicking under weeping willows with friends.
I was reminded of a great quote from an Irish philosopher who said that the meaning of life was not about being happy, but was more about discovering fulfillment and contentment. I couldn’t agree more. So, as I watched my kids run about freely, making friends with everyone around them, I felt my heart surge—I found myself both fulfilled and content.

Laurie Berkner

We are also Laurie Berkner fans and have a new posting over at ParentZing! that readers may enjoy.  We went to her recent concert in NYC (Lincoln Center, Avery Fisher Hall).  What fun!

u r right

How very true. Often its just the simple little things that can make time with others wonderful. My son and I lay on the grass in the backyard and make pictures out of the clouds or we will sit outside on a cold night and pick out the stars. All of these kinds of things make our bonds stronger and not to mention they dont cost a cent.

Thanks for the warm and fuzzy!!

That sounds wonderful...
The other day I just popped the kids in the car and off we went, tired of being stuck inside we decided to take off to the closest pond I knew to feed the ducks.. Forgot to check the pond first as it was still a bit frozen so the ducks had not come back.. But as nature would have it there were still lots of seagulls and squirrels to be throwing the bread too.. The kids had fun and I had a break from the screams inside the house...

It is amazing what we find when you just decided to get up and go. We even had the pleasure of arguing over weather or not an animal we saw was a baby beaver or a water rat.. It for sure was not a beaver because the tail was all wrong.. But it was fun anyway. My step daughter got close enough for the animal to play dead so she was able to get some photos off it....  So it was a lovely outing for us....

Glad to hear you had a great time.

Get out & about...
I see your point entirely - you don't have to live in New York to find lovely areas close by that you can take your kids too.  My friends have older kids than me, and they are always talking about great places to take the kids to play, and for them to relax.  I was surprised that there are so many places, you just have to look for them, then make the effort to get out there and enjoy them.

Thanks for the reminder

Weekend frolics

I think that sounds wonderful. We love to get out and enjoy the parks and beaches around where we live. In Brisbane we have all sorts of wonderful outdoor areas for the kids to play in.

Lovely outing...
But what about those of us who don't live in NY?  Where is the advice in your advice?

Lovely outing...
Advice I s'pose is that finding fulfillment and contentment is often right under our noses.  We just need to step outdoors and watch our children.
