Anorexia Nervosa

hermy by hermy Talking Back(April 2007) (rank 92nd)

My eldest daughter has a friend, this young lady has struggled with this illness since she was 12 years old…..At first it was treated as something they really were not sure of, but eventually it was diagnosed as anorexia nervosa…..

      Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder, it is mostly common in adolescent girls and young women, a small percentage of adolescent boys are also at risk……

                   Anorexia nervosa is the self starvation of an individual in pursuit of extreme thinness. The cause is unknown, but it is said that a combination of hormonal, social and psychological factors are responsible.

                   Regardless of how much a young individual weighs, they may begin obsessive dieting, when the individual does eat, they may induce vomiting or abuse laxatives to avoid gaining weight, and many will also exercise obsessively.

  Warning Signs;

n      Preoccupation with food

n      Thinking they are fat when they are actually bone thin

n      Wearing of very baggy  clothes

n      Fear of gaining  weight

n      Refusal to eat

n      Denial of hunger

n      Obsessive exercise

n      Hair loss

n      Brittle nails

n      Constantly stating they are cold

n      A fine layer of hair on the body and face, like a new born baby

n      Depression

n      Irregular or absent periods

   Signs to look for;

n      Fatigue

n      Nervousness or hyperactivity

n      Dry skin

n      Hair loss

n      Intolerance to cold

  More serious signs;

n      Heart problems

n      Loss of bone mass

n      Kidney failure

n      Death

                   Treatment is intense and long term, it begins with an eating disorder specialist, a psychiatrist, a doctor and a dietician….Counselling is also very beneficial, this will help find all the underlaying factors….

           Individuals who suffer this disorder will often deny their problem and refuse treatment. Food intake must be monitored closely as these individuals are good at deceiving, relapses are common, but do avoid making food a constant source of attention and conflict…….

          Obsessive dieting may result in anorexia nervosa and sufferers may be at risk of death from starvation….

           If you are aware of an individual who is showing any of the signs, contact a doctor knowledgeable in eating disorders immediately, your own family GP will know who to contact as well…….

          My daughter’s friend will have to struggle for the rest of her life with this illness, but at the moment things are good and she has started uni and is doing really well…..

          I hope this helps………

Anorexia

My cousin has been anorexic for about 20yrs. With all the damage she has done to her body over the years it is amazing she has survived. Her image problems began when she was told by her ice skating teacher that she was a little too large. I bet that the teacher never knew just how much impact those words had to my cousin or wether she even realises that her words contributed to my cousins anorexia.

This type of information needs to be told over and over again to kids and others need to be aware and stay aware of the warning signs.

Areally well written article, thankyou

thats so sad....

People need to stop and think before they say things. i was friends with this guy in high school who was quite thin, 5 years later i saw him and he was stick thin, a few weeks later i saw him on tv he was the winner of mr punyverse.he weighed a shocking 42kgs! i always complaned i was fat to a friend, she was tick thin too and one day she snapped and said to shutup cause being stick thin wasnt anyeasier than being fat.

so been there
as a sufferer it helps to know people are letting others know what to look for... after years of starving and binging i have now got to live with having done irreversible damage to my body.... and every time i look in the mirror i still hate what i see.....especially with my hair  falling out....

I hope others can let their loved ones know that this disease affects you for life ...I almost destroyed my family as well...I no longer have periods and i have to deal with severe bouts of depression...even now i struggle with food..... either eating nothing or binging..... and i have to remind myself that i have to get thru for my kids.....

Good work in getting this info out......I hope that my kids never have to go thru this terrible condition and its info like this that helps stop it in its tracks
Hugs and

stop the cycle!

One of my good friends from high school went from being beautiful, top of the class and involved in anything she could to being absent all of a sudden. She was off school and in hospital with this disease. Almost cost her all her hard work and it was over a year till she came back to school. it was supposed to be a secret but you know high school everyone knows everyone elses business, so natually when she came back everyone knew. She looked great, full cheeks, nice figure still slightly under weight. Then some ignorant so and so says "jeez you've put on alot of weight, oh well im sure its nothing a quick diet wont fix". He knew about her condition and was one of her friends but because she wasnt his view of perfect, he felt it necessary to say something.  Because of this and many other comments received from other peers she was back in hospital before the end of the week.

Where do people learn that this type of behaviour is a good idea?! I do recognise its not thier fault she regressed back but the lack of support was a bit part of it. I hope i can teach my son a bit of decorum and respect so he doesnt become part of the problem. She is now doing very well, shes at uni and goes out regularly. I just hope she has the skills and self respect now to teach her children so they dont fall in the same trap.

Great article, its important for issues like this to be discussed. I know i had no idea that my friend had a problem and niether did alot of people including her parents. Hopefully people like you will open more people's eyes so maybe we can start recognising thte symptoms before it becomes a problem!

well written and believe me it needs to be told as many times as possible. This is something that is very hard to live with and something that will never go away but that can be managed. Thank you Sandra for this article.

Our mind is a powerful tool. I personally haven't met anyone with this disease but how frightening it must be.
