What is Anemia? l know but do you.....facts for everyone

bubba76 by bubba76 Talking(April 2007) (rank 96th)

Many of us get tired from time to time unexpectedly, i know for a fact before i was told i was anemic i couldn't understand why i felt so run down. Getting up in the morning felt like an enourmous Challenge. All i wanted to do was sleep. I didn't want to do anything somedays. After a quick trip to the doctors & a blood test my doctor told me i was anemic. What is anemia? I asked him. Dont worry he said most women have it. then he explained exactly what it is. Most of the time we neglect ourselve because of our busy lives & we buy take away food instead of having steak every night. Some people become anemic because there vegiterian and they think they are getting the (RDI) from the vegitables they eat but there not. All you need is to do eat properly and you'll feel fine in no time at all. He gave me a perscription for a vitamin C to help absorb the iron into the blood strem & Iron tablets & i've been taking them whenever i'm run down ever since.

l have had Anemia since my third son was born 9 years ago. l do eat alot of high iron meats and vegies but sometime like during my period i need more thats why tablets help with this.

One of my best friends has Thalassemia, she learned to live with it everyday of her life. Thalassimia is where the hemoglobin (red blood cells) dont have a protective covering around them of protein, because of this she cant absorb iron into the blood stream. She is also on medication to take the iron from her body as the injections can cause her body to have to much iron called Iron Over Load. Not a happy story. There is a link at the end for more information on what thalassimia is.So Don't Panic this is Inheritted.

Anemia is a condition where the number of Red Blood cells that Carry oxygen around the body are low. Iron in our bodys helps our body to make more of these. Anemia is the most common disorder known to Doctors. Anemia is NOT a disease it is a condition that results in below normal levels of hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Hemoglobin is the of the blood cells is the pigment that carries oxygen from the lungs to the blood to the tissues & the organs. There are many kinds of Anemia each has its own cause & symptom (e.g poor diet) The most sever types of this are inherited

Why do i need to take iron tablets?

The only reason you would need to take an iron supplement is because you are not getting it into your diet. Now this doesn't mean going by the Recommended Dietry Intake (RDI), because even though it is a guideline it is also old and based on the average person. If you have a demanding lifestyle then you will need more than the average Joe (no meanness to Joe intended). The best way to make sure you don't have an iron deficiency is to check out for the signs.
Symptoms can include:
*Feeling Tired/being worn down
*Dryness in your mouth/throat
*smooth tongue
*sores in corners of mouth
*Brittle nails (extreme cases)
*struggling to swallow
*Light headedness/Fainting

How will an Iron Supplement Help me?

It will give you more energy to get threw your day, you will wake up feeling refreshed and alert, and you will want to take on any challenge. But consult your doctor FIRST.

But speak with your doctor & have a blood test, never just asume you need to take Iron Tablets. As so many ilnesses often have similar symptoms.

Re: What is Anemia? l know but do you.....facts for everyone
great article. my levels were under half for the majority of my last pregnancy (had to have infusions, seven hours sitting still is crap! i don't take well to being still for that long.) and i am normally anemic because my kidneys are demented. so funny the docs couldn't get why i was still able to walk around let alone go to a coldplay concert nine months preggers YEAH ROCK ON!!!!, ( i am insane, hehee!) the body does 'try' to cope on it's own by increasing the amount of sleep but in the end life is so much groovier when it is managed. ::P

Great advice. I have to have iron injections weekly, my body does not absorb iron through tablets.

They thought I would need a blood transfusion when I had my last baby but luckily I didn't bleed to much.

Thanks for sharing,

Dee

Re: What is Anemia? l know but do you.....facts for everyone
hii my name is stef and im 15years old at the moment, turning 16 soon. I went to the doctors to get a blood test a while back & my test results came back and my iron was on 2 when its supposed to be between 13-30 i think? So my doctor quickly sent me to the hospital to get a blood transfusion because i would allways feel week and sleepy. Once i slept for around 15hours straight because i couldnt get out of bed i was really sleepy. Well now i am taking these tablets and i dont think they are working that much because my heart is beating weirdly and it effects my breathing. I have to go back to my doctor to get another blood test in a month. Any suggestions on what i should do?
thanks :)
