Kava has its place in Cultural practices...But does it have a place with young teens?

Kava

I know I said I had finished writing advice on drugs but I was surfing the net for something else and came across this one and thought to myself I would write an article on it...Just to let you all know about it and what it does...So here
it is...

Kava is a plant that belongs to the pepper family...Piperaceae...It has sedative or relatant effects and this is found in the stump and the roots of this plant...The relaxant ingredient in this plant is called kavalactones...

Fiji, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, use this plant for an important cultural practice...To them Kava drinking helps in strengthening social ties...Alot of people from these areas who have sttled here in Australia have continued this practice of Kava drinking but alot of Australians have taken it up too...Australians are using products too that contain Kava...Some of these products are herbal preperations to help with insomnia and stress relief...

Some of the street names fo this drug are kava kava, lewena, waka, kawa, yaqona,  grog, sakau,  'awa,  'ava, wati . some of these names are used in different countries like fiji and new Guinea...

This was a tradition practice used to help communication with the spirits and to help re affirm status and rank in the community...It was chewed then ground...soaked in water to make a drink for the above rituals...

Since the 1980s Kava has been used heavily for its sedative, hypnotic and the fact it is a muscle relaxant...So it is being used pretty much the same way as alcohol...This was used only for ceremonial and traditional purposes...

What are the effects of this drug...
Drinking in moderation this can make you feel happy, relaxed and sleepy...This can also make the mouth and throat feel numb and make you appetite lower... Whereas in large amounts the effects may be extreme sleepiness feeling sick and a loss of muscle control... When Kava is used excessively the side effects that may happen are bloodshot eyes, dry, scaly skin,  severe weight loss, more open to  to infections, loss of muscle control, shortness of breath, chest pains, high blood pressure, irreversible liver and kidney damage. Along with most drugs I have written about this one too comes with links to mental health issues when used excessively like mood swings, depression and other mental illnesses can become complicated by the use of this...

Kava is not physically addictive but people who use this often can become dependant on it...Feel that they need it...

Kava is not illegal In Australia but it is a controlled substance...Which means it is hard to import this without the relevant paperwork and permission etc...

Whether illegal or not in the hands of an experiementing teen this could be dangerous...This is used for Pacific islanders in rituals...Not abused by teenagers...

Just wanted to share this...
Take care all
Cheers
Angie

kava in the right hands

The only natural health products containing kava now are practioner only products, thus meaning a naturopath or pharmacist has to have supplied it, there is one called kalm kids which im not sure has kava in it anymore, and it was so low dose it woulndt have caused an issue.

The kava debate in Australia started about 3 years ago when a woman who had died was found to have some kava in her system, ultimately after 2 years investigation it was found that she had pre existing liver conditions and that the kava had indeed not contributed to her death. Kava was taken off the market for nearly 3 years pending the outcome of this case, when it was cleared the ACH council had it made available again, a good outcome because when used correctly and in its place it is an invaluable herb.

Fear and Loathing in Tonga?
Just talking from my own experiences with kava from 'The Kava Hut' on Hindley St, Adelaide.
It was quite expensive ($6 for a medium strength concoction, 1 cup), ID was required, it tasted like the most horrible tasting thing in the universe x 100000, and the effect was barely noticeable. I don't think that even a teenager looking to get loaded would bother... well not twice.
Want something to be worried about? http://www.totse.com/en/drugs/otc/index.html will scare the hell out of you. Motion sickness tablets, some cold and flu tablets (specifically containing DXM), and ... Nutmeg!

Where you can get it.
I noticed on the right side of this page the Google ads are showing different places you can get Kava from. I understood it was made by the elders chewing on the roots and spitting the juice into a bowl and that put me off the whole idea of it.

Great Stuff!
I personally have never heard of it but it sounds like it could be pretty dangerous if in the wrong hands or mouth LOL (sorry)
I think it is sad that people take cultural ingredients and abuse the power that the ingredients have (if that makes sense lol)

Keep up the good Angie! Thanks for informing us!

Kava

In our Fijian culture it is meant to be only used for special ceremonies, sadly it is now openly drunk every night in every village in Fiji, and is abused by both our elders and young people alike.  Young people and parents should be aware of this product as it can become addictive, and is so much cheaper than alocohol etc.  A few years ago in the outback of Australia it was becoming a big problem amongst the aboriginals.  So the authorities were looking at banning it, this did not end up happening. You have written a very informative article, good on you for making this drug know to others.

That is a shame...About the abuse of it in Fiji ...What once would have been a very traditional thing is now not so special...Thanks for your comment..

Funny thing...

We went to Fiji 2 years ago.  My husband was working in Canberra with a man from Nadi, Fiji and asked us to bring him some Kava.  He connected us with a friend to get him quality stuff.  Well, when we came through customs, we obviously declared it and they didn't even open the bag it was in.  Didn't even blink an eye.  Wonder if the import laws have changed since then or if she just didn't care?

I did try it when we were there.  Tasted like bitter dirty water.  But I also see the ceremonial side of it and am fine with that.  They have Kava bars there and it is just like a bunch of drunks hanging out only drunk on Kava.  Can be bad news even to the Islanders if used in excess.
