Drugs and teens...Nutmeg...

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(April 2007) (rank 7th)
Well after reading a comment on my Kava article here... I went to the website that this person gave me and wow to my shock and horror thought geez raising kids in this time and age is hard and there is alot out there that scares the absolute poop
out of me to be frank hehe...So I thought I better start to write some articles to let you all be aware of these things...So this is the next on in my articles on drugs and teens....

Nutmeg..

Yes you read it right Nutmeg...It is a something that is found in most pantrys...well i know its in mine that is for sure but after reading some things about it I will only be keeping it in small amounts now I do not care how much its on special hehehe....

The intoxicating properties of Nutmeg have been known for a very long time...After reading a bit of imformation on the internet it seems it has been used for a very long time back in ancient times for what they called its magical properties and even  by men in jail for a high... the beginning of use of nutmeg as a drug seems to be accidental at first but it has long been substitutated by people who lack  funds and  needed to get a high...Its cheap and it works....

If Nutmeg is taken in low doses it has no effect on a person...But when large doses are taken there definately is an effect on the user... most users of Nutmeg use about a 1 gram dose which gives them a mild to medium hallucinogen with this comes Mild euphoria and things being visually distorted... A large dose of 7.5g or more becomes dangerous and can cause convulsions, palpitations, nausea, eventual dehydration, and generalized body pain.

A test was done on Nutmeg and the chemicals it contains MAO inhibitors...This affects the brain's ability to stop amines, found in most common foods, from affecting the brain and body. In this test it was also noted that nutmeg takes on a similar chemical make up to MDMA(ecstasy)... Are we getting worried yet?

Then there is the high risk of getting NUTMEG PSYCHOSIS it is recognised by hallucinations, excitement, thought disorder, a sense of impending death and agitation...Just like many other forms of drug induced psychosis... When nutmeg is used in smaller doses it can also be toxic to the user...as small an amount as 5 g can cause the user to have a dry mouth, fast pulse flushing and fever...Because it is similar to MDMA the user drinks huge amounts of water...Unfortunately for the user the problem with taking Nutmeg and getting a bad reaction is if you go to the hospital you will still have to wait out the trip which can last anywhere up to three days after taking this...

Well to say I am shocked and a little concerned about more dangerous stuff on the internet my kids can find would definately be the understatement of the year... Just goes to show that people will try anything to get that feeling of being high...Not me thats for sure and once again I will be telling my kids about the dangers of this and sending them  to  Wikipedia website to check out this info... Oh and I blocked that website from the kids computers just incase hehe...

Have a good day
Cheers
Angie

Re: Drugs and teens...Nutmeg...

Ok cookclan, good effort on stating the dangers of this substance, but i found your article lacking proper sources and misinformation is given.

Firstly, Nutmeg contains myristicin, a weak monoamine oxidase inhibitor.

Myristicin is a substance that could be converted to an amphetamine metabolite in the liver by transamination.

Nutmeg is in NO WAY SIMILAR TO MDMA (ECSTASY) But when converted to an amphetamine metabolite, it can cause a hallucinogenic experience. When a user intakes to much myristicin than can be converted, that is when there is a risk of nutmeg intoxication (death, nausea, vomiting) but that is well over 8 tablespoons. In serving sizes like 4-6 tablespoons, a heavy "trip" will come on to the "user"[source]

Since no research has been done on this drug, it should be treated as potentially as brain-damaging as heroin [source]

cheers!

Re: Drugs and teens...Nutmeg...

We found nutmeg in my Grandaughters room today. We googled the use for it with teens and your article came up. We were very glad to read it. We had called the hospital and they hadn't heard of anything to do with nutmeg and kids. Thanks so much!

I can't believe I just watched how to make a nutmeg drink... Won't tell you where because I'd hate to think kids can see this and get an idea from it...  But geeze what are these kids playing at... I would love their mothers to find this....

Nutmeg...now for baking our kids!

OMG, who would have known that nutmeg, a simple little spice would have such capabilities?  Scary to think that these things that are available easily can be so deadly!

Great advice.

How do these people figure this stuff out. I mean, how does one who needs a fix think.."gee, why dont I try nutmeg" If they can think of that and it actually worked for them, then i would hate to know how many other things they have tried but had no effect from. Thankyou once again for a scary insight into our kids possible futures. Keep em coming!!

Nutmeg
I think its desperation but who knows? Humans by nature experiment and explore different food and drink substances by natural instinct or commercial profitability...I mean who first though of drinking cows milk, making goats cheese or any other number of unusual food products we purchase and consume without really considering why we are doing what we are doing and I think for these kids... be it desperation, boredom or whatever... they are doing the same if more dangerous experimentation. The other things is word of mouth, the most important way of spreading information; be it good or bad, one peer tells another I heard, a friend of a friend told me or whatever sadly it happens. Apparently passionfruit vine is amazing to smoke, has no effect but is visually fascinating to watch but that was a tale from a friend of a friend of mine.

Re: Nutmeg

Nutmeg has been used by tribal cultures for its hallucinogenic properties long before it was introduced to the western world as a spice. No junkie just suddenly decided to "do" nutmeg.
