Baby Talk

nell18-3 by nell18-3 Young Parent(April 2007) (rank 1st)
I always thought everyone did this!

You see a friend/relative with their baby and have a baby conversation with the little baby

They goo back and you feel all warm  and proud parents look on happily.....

Well apparently not everyone does do this!

I
was quite shocked at the school gates today, everyone was pleased to see one of the Mums turn up with their brand new baby and of course all the usual baby talk started around them
But the Mum stopped it!!
She made it clear that they don't see the need in that kind of chatter as baby doesn't understand and they learn much faster when you break sentences down on talking to the baby. Only using fewer words and making it simple as they want the baby to be able to concentrate and learn faster.

So I'm thinking
SIT. LIE DOWN. NO. WALK..........
Now where have I heard this before
Oh Yea!
TRAINING A PUPPY!!!!!!!

As if to underline my whole argument that this can't be right, she says they did this with their older daughter and she looks to be a straight A student!
Yea thats right, I know her daughter, she is in fact definitely a straight A student
BUT
She has no social skills, has few friends, keeps isolating herself and is scared of failing at anything she trys.
I'm sure we would all wish our children to turn out like that
N O T !!!!!!
Bless her, this older sister is actually a sweet natured child but you can just see her loneliness and see how she has no idea of interacting with others.

So, can I please say to any new parents that are currently cooing over their babies
Coo as much as you like
Babies need that kind of attention from you to be able to learn how to mix and socialise with others
Who cares if they don't yet understand what you are saying
They are getting attention from you and learning communication

So Keep Up With The Baby Talk
Your Child Needs You To!!!!

Re: Baby Talk
Priceless, we are people and we thrive on interaction.  I wonder how on earth those parents expect their children to fare in the 'big wide world' when they are older?  hmm,
Great article here.
Peace

to be honest....
i do not like baby talk simply for the fact that it sounds awful and the child (if spoken to with baby talk past the baby stage) WILL talk babyish...... so i never really spoke much baby talk to my daughter and i would limit what was said.
I do agree though that baby's need to develop a sense of sound first before they can start the proper language development.
Sorry if it sounds like a put down of your article helen, it wasn't..... i thought it was great, but this was just my personal opinion hehehe! and i did give u 5 stars hehehe

What !!!! How dare you have a personal opinion!!
Good for you Kayla.
The whole comunication key is that we teach our child to communicate with others in any way that we are happy with, and you do this too

I have never baby talked to my child...
I don't know if I would either.. LOL but this is not because I think it is stupid or anything.. LOL
It is because I do not know how to baby talk in French.. LOL   In French I don't think there is a translation for a horsey. LOL it is just plain old horse... As for goo goo ga ga... I never did that either.. I don't know why.. I loved my baby and he made me melt every time he smiled.. But I just never did...

And when I do talk to my son in English, it is usually general conversation stuff.  Poor kid has enough trouble trying to learn two languages. Not sure how it would go if I added goo and gaa in there.. Mind you... It could be a start of a third one.. LOL

baby talk
yes! i very much believe baby talk it great, up to a certain age, Koens second cousin is 6 years old and still talks like a baby because her parents and family spoke to her that way, like calling a gate - a date, plane - pwane... and cutting all of her words down which is very hard to understand eg. aputer instead of computer

so yeah, i love your article, i spoke baby talk to my bubs when he was newborn up to probably 6 months of age and never cared if anyone else did, then i started talking to him. and at his age now, i would flip at a person who decided to teach my son the wrong words LOL!

great  article Nell!

Absolutely!!
I think for most people their first reaction when they see a baby is to coo at it, I know I do I just can't help it. The baby get's a lot out of it too because your having fun with them and they take that all in, they just need to be made a fuss of....... I love the little noises they make.......
