Getting the mundane tasks done--5 minutes at a time

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(April 2007) (rank 7th)

I am finding myself more and more overwhelmed every single day trying to mother a newborn and a very active toddler.  Now that we are in the process of moving, it is difficult to stay on top of things.  These are a few of the things that I have

tried to keep it all together.

  • Get creative with your laundry.  I know what you are thinking.  How do laundry and creativity EVER go together?  Well, laundry can take forever if you let it get backed up so my new trick is to throw a load in before bedtime.  When I first wake up in the morning, I run downstairs and move the load from the washer to the dryer.  By the time breakfast is done and I am dressed and ready for the day, the load is piping hot (and dry) and ready to be folded.  If you just do one load a day (when you need to), it doesn't seem like such an overwhelming task anymore.
  • Clean the bathroom or sweep the kitchen floor while you are cooking dinner.  Do you ever find yourself waiting for the pasta or the rice to finish cooking?  Step into a bathroom close by and give it a quick wipe up.  Or even easier yet, sweep the kitchen floor or shake the dirt out of the kitchen rug.
  • Iron some shirts while you are watching a favorite t.v. show.  I know you would rather lounge around during your "free time" but even taking 5 minutes to get some much needed ironing done will give you gratification.  Maybe you can even watch MORE of your show because you are getting things accomplished in the meantime.

These are just a few ideas that have helped me feel a little better about dealing with the clutter that is my house.  If you just take it 5 minutes at a time, it seems to be much more manageable.  What do you do to make the house work more tolerable?

I also break my tasks into 15 minute intervals and if it takes longer than 15 minutes than I set the timer for another 15 minutes and so on.

See www.flylady.com for more information about this.

mundane...

You are so right to break the mundane in to small chores.  It makes it seem so much less work and seems easier to manage.

Great suggestions.
