Sugar High

snowntish by snowntish Speaking(April 2007) (rank 356th)

Anyone else's child turn into a mad hyper maniac after a treat?

I found found this great site www.fedup.com.au

It is not specifically designed for kids, but is has a wide range of advise on many topics.

I was most interested in Sugar intolerance in kids

and what foods are best.

I have been rewarding good behaviour with treats only to have Holly's head spin and do a Jekl and Hyde on me... it would continue until she burnt out and finally  crashed (sometimes after midnight).

So I highly reccomend this site to other parents!

Re: Sugar High

I saw  program about testing whether sugar makes kids hyper, and the study found out that it's actually not the sugar that makes kids hyper. It's the activity that they engage in, that makes them hyper.   A group of kids from the UK were given 2 parties in 2 days. The first day they were given all things sweet at the party, but the activity they were made to do were quiet and centered activities like drawing, playdoh, etc. When they were sent home, the parents were told that they were given veggies in the party and nothing at all sweet. At home, the parents commented how calm their kids seemed to be.

Then on the 2nd day, the kids were given veggies in the party but the activies were all hyper activities: jumping, running, hitting things, etc.  But when they were sent home, the parents were told the kids were given all things sugary during the party. Again, when the parents got home, they said that their kids were absolutely bouncing off the walls.

Very interesting.
