ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!

Anonymous Author (May 2007)
Now to be honest with everyone, i never knew they still existed up until 2 weeks ago when my mum and i came across them when we went shopping and i just had to buy them!

PRICE :
You can usually pick them up for around $6 AU

AGES: Depending on the size of the pieces, they can start from as young as 6 months and up

WHY I THINK THEY ARE SO GOOD?
They help stimulate the baby's mind, big bright puzzle pieces to look at and how proud they get when they can fit the pieces in the right part of the board!
Koen only got his two weeks ago, and now he remembers where they all go, and it gives us time to play and learn together :)
Because he doesn't seem interested in talking yet, i believe these puzzles are stimulating his mind as he is trying to repeat to me the names of the different objects! This is teaching him early problem solving skills and co-ordination skills.
The pictures on the right show the 2 puzzles he has completed now, i have now decided to write the object name on the back of each puzzle piece for future learning and the next step will definately be getting wooden puzzles with numbers and letters from the Alphabet.

These are a great way to teach baby all different types of things while baby is having fun figuring out where all the pieces go!

Why wooden?
Its non-toxic, almost unbreakable, un-bendable and the pieces wont warp when or if they get chewed on, they are also easy to wipe clean.. Plastic puzzles on the other hand are not as durable, and as soon as they get chewed on, they dont fit into their spot on the puzzle board :(

i give this educational toy <- five stars out of 5

Those Puzzles are loved by most kids and they are great.  You can get them at Walmart and Costco most of the time if you are having trouble finding them in Canada

Re: ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!

I believe the best toys ever invented where the wooden ones.

Some of them where not safe.

Such as the rocking horse, but good if parents where supervising while using.

There used to be a great variety of wolden toys avalible.

There where ones with beads and puzzles.

They are mostly memorys now unless you have heaps of money and know where to get

Great qualitiy items.

Great Advice

Re: ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!

I have at times seen cheap versions at Crazy Clarks but I think your best bet would be to keep a keen eye out at garage sales and markets.

Re: ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!

They are just the best.

Our kids at 17 and 19 are beyond these by now (I hope) but we have kept them for our Grandchildren one day...they last last forever and do teach the kids to problem solve which I see as one of the best things a parent can teach.

Re: ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!

I love wooden puzzles too. Actually I love all wooden toys - they look great, and stay looking great for a long time. Also they make great hand-me-downs for your children's children in years to come, and to keep as heirlooms.

We have the wooden Thomas the Tank Engine train set, Plan City car tracks, lots of wooden musical instruments etc...

Re: ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!

Great article. We have lots of wooden toy's and puzzles. They are so durable and when the colour fades you can re- paint or stick new pictures on them. We have two toy shops close at hand that do nothing but wooden toy's. It is such good fun when Birthday and Christmas come around, to go down and choose a toy. It makes me feel like a kid again. He He.

Re: ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!
We have the wooden peg-board puzzles as well as the wooden jigsaw puzzles.  We also have other normal jigsaw puzzles too.  What I've found is that the wooden puzzles can be brought out when other kids are here visiting and as you say they are almost unbreakable!

These are great Channy - good old fashioned fun.  Jaydee is getting a little too clever for these now - however I am going to try and find more intricate wooden puzzles as they are nice and tough!

Re: ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!

It is amazing just how fast the little ones figure these out.

We looked after a 2 year old for a year that had never had any form of mental stimulation but was fascinated by these and solved them so fast.

Simple things like these should be written up as a need in the parenting handbook.

Re: ROADTEST - The Good Old Wooden Puzzles!

They are an excellent idea I only have the wooden ones at home, only because my little ones think that the cardboard tastes great!!!!!!!! and I ended up loosing all the pieces.   Kmart and Big W are great places to find them.  There is also a party plan bunch that goes around selling them too.  I think they can also make to order if you wanted one made in the kids names.

My grandfather used to make wooden toys for the markets including those puzzles, they were such great quality toys too! my nieces still have a rocking horse which used to belong to my sister, its a shame he has had to stop making them (going blind)
Good quality is definately very hard to come by these days.

Wooden puzzles
They really are great and they can grow with your child.  I had some Montesorri ones for my children when they got a little bit older and even I struggled with some of them!  They loved them though. There were some made out in the shape of a map of the country with all the provinces/states cut out as individual pieces, so they learnt some geography as well!
