Taking the trauma out of the first haircut

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(May 2007) (rank 167th)
Not too long ago we took my son to get his first official haircut.  I had been cutting his hair up until then but frankly he was looking a little ragged.  The first time was crazy and not so great.  The second time was better because we changed it
up a bit.
  • Find someone who is good with kids.  We went to a special place that caters to cutting kids hair and they weren't that great.  We then went to Bob the Barber who had been cutting hair for about 45 years and had 7 grandchildren.  BINGO!!!  He knew just how to make Ethan feel comfortable.
  • Take a special toy that will keep your child occupied.  We took Ethan's favorite dinosaur and he was properly distracted.  He kept telling his dinosaur everything that was going on and he definitely felt more comfortable.  Bob also had a stack of children's books to entertain if and when Ethan started to get nervous.
  • Have your child sit on Mom or Dad's lap when they get the haircut.  Ethan sat on his dad's lap and wasn't even one bit nervous because he knew that his dad would take care of him.  Making your child feel safe makes all the difference in the world when the whirl of the clippers starts to go.
These are just a few ideas about how to make getting a haircut just a little more fun.  What kind of things do you do to help your child adjust to new and perhaps uncomfortable situations?

All my kids first hair cuts were in a trolley.

Great tips - we are just in that stage where Jaydee needs his 2nd haircut - actually, we have been there for about 2mths.  Stephen did the first one ok, however that was a miracle, as he just followed him around and snipped bits here and there.

Haircuts!
I take my boys to 'Just Cuts' as they have a portable DVD player that they put on for kids; Thomas the Tank Engine, Nemo, Bob The Builder. They sit still the whole time!!

It is amazing how a good video can keep the kids sitting still!  Thank God for Thomas.

I found that Grub was really easy going when it came to haircut time as he loves having his hair brushed. I swear he is a metrosexual! If I blow-dry, brush or put product in my hair, guess who's lining up fo his dose. So I'd say brush thier hair in front of the mirror so that they are used to it and give them something to occupy those little hands when it comes to cuttin time.

And I missed the bit about the clippers...I will only let them use the clippers on his neck. Personal choice. He's very fair and looks bald and soo much older than 2yo when they used the clippers. I cried at his clipper hair do.

oh my gosh.  You are so lucky on the hairbrushing.  Ethan acts like I am trying to knock his head off when I take a comb to his hair after his bath.

good ideas
We did all those things and I also used to stand behind them and pull faces until I realized I was really showing off to the hair dressers who found me more entertaining than my children.

In addition...
Sometimes, it is the cover/drape that causes problems for the kids.

That was an issue with ours until we said it was a super hero cape.

You know, that is such a great point.  Frankly, I find the cape scary myself.  I like Frontier's idea about it being a super hero cape.  Of course we don't know what superheros are over here just yet but that's a good one for future reference.
