Sleep Walking

hermy by hermy Talking Back(May 2007) (rank 85th)

My mother has told me stories about my sleep walking as a child…my older two children were never unsettled sleepers, Ryan is, this is why I am beginning to wonder whether Ryan could be sleep walking,

he seems to have all the symptoms for it.

Ryan will often wonder around his room, he seems to reach a certain point and then he gets stuck somehow, that is when he cries and you find him in a corner of his room, looking disoriented. Some times he wonders into our bedroom, not to hop into bed with us but more just to find us, and even though his eyes are open they look like his not there, if you know what I mean, and on other occasions he can became very agitated and upset. He may have a few quiet nights and then a few unsettled nights, they happen randomly. They appear to get worse if his getting sick…..

This is the reason for my advice……..

Sleep walking is where a child is partly, but not completely, awake during the night, sleep walking is called “Somnambulism”. Sleep walking is common in children and can begin as soon as a child is able to walk. Often there is a family history of sleep walking or night terrors.

          Signs and Symptoms;

n      A young child may wonder around in his/her cot

n      A child may sit up in bed and repeat certain movements

n      An older child will get out of bed and walk around their room or house

n      Occasionally a child may wonder outside

n      They will either walk to were their parents are or may follow a light source

n      The child is disorientated, eyes will be open but will looked glazed

n      Occasionally a child will became very upset during an episode

n      Episodes may became worse with illness

                             The most important thing as a parent of a sleep walking child is to protect your child from harm;

n      Lock all windows and doors

n      Make sure there are gates on stairways

n      Make sure the child’s room is cleared of any objects they may trip over

n       If the child is going away overnight make sure you inform the person in charge, so they are prepared.

n      Maintain a good sleeping pattern

n      Stay calm and never try waking the child

Sleep walking is not usually associated with psychiatric or psychological problems. It usually does not need medical treatment…

Most children will outgrow these episodes, however, children who do not outgrow them may need to have a medical evaluation.

When attending an evaluation you should have documentation of what has been happening (keep a dairy). The doctor will need to know a full medical history, medications and if there are any other sleep disorders. The doctor will most probably organise a sleep study and other test to rule out any underlaying causes…..

             I hope this helps……..

Re: Sleep Walking

I've seen a few people sleep walk and talk.

I have often heard that we should not wake sleep walkers, but may I ask why?

Re: Sleep Walking

Make sure you let any babysitter know that your children or child sleep walk. I know from bitter experience it is a real shock when a sleeping child appears out of the blue, so to speak.

sleep walking
I once saw a documentry on this where there is a theory that it is a genetic based thing.  I notice that you say you did it when you were a child.  I did it when I was a kid and my daughter does it to.  I guess as for most things there are many theorys...but this one seemed to make a lot of sense.  It had something to do with both members of the family who were sleep walkers had some specific DNA code that was the same.  It was a long time ago that I saw it but thats about all I can remember.  I think this time of testing was in the early stages.  Just a thought.

Predispostion

I didn't realize beign a child of a sleep walker would predispose you to sleepwalking.  My dad did it, I did it as a child and still to this day, sometimes see things in my sleep or sleepwalk.  My son is a very unsettled sleeper.  Wonder if he will be a sleep walker too?

Great advice!
Angela

sleep walking

I don't think I would actually of called it sleep walking as such, but one night when my oldest was about 8 he got up and walked towards the toilet room and I asked him "what are you doing ?"he said "going to the toilet " he opened my laundry cubboard and turned around and then proceded to pee in my laundry basket beside the washing machine then just turned around and went back to bed like nothing had happened he must have still been asleep or a little disorientated lol.

sleep rolling

when i was younger we had family friends stay with us for the weekend and one of them was sleeping in the sleeping bag when we all went to bed he was in my brothers room asleep i got up through the night and found him in the kitchen on the floor still in the sleeping bad, told mum she tryed to move him but in the end we couln't so we left him there but move all the things out of his way, i got up again later to see where he was and this time i found him in the bathroom still in the sleeping bad, moved everthing again so that he couldn't hurt himself, went back to bed.  in the morning i came out looking for him and he was back in my brothers room.  we asked him if he remember anything from the night b4 but he didn't.  dad later told us that he had stayed up all night to make sure that nothing had happened to him and told us that the way he was getting in and out of the doors was by moving like a catapiller and once he was out of the door he was then rolling everywhere
