dogs and kids

winja by winja Talking Back(May 2007) (rank 57th)

as a huuuge animal lover with waay to many pets i thought id write a lil bit of advice on pets with kids.
dogs seem to be the most popular pet so il write about them this time.
its a parents choice as to what sort of dog u

choose as u will be the one taking care of it most of the time if your children are under 10, all kids can help with the pets a bit but u will be the main caregiver so keep that in mind.
things to look at b4 gettin a dog is cost, breed, amount of time needed to care for the pet and age appropiatness.
five is a good age for a first pet for a child as any age b4 that u will have to constanly supervise the child and animal.
Kids must always be taught how to be kind to animals, and know that tails & ears are never to be pulled! This list of dog breeds is for reference only, please be sure to talk to the breeder about children and dogs living together.
dogs best suited for kids are:
labradors or golden retrievers, border collies, beagles, basset hounds, collies, boxers and pugs.
ive looked around and these tend to be the dogs most recomended for families, they all have their pros and cons though so do look into whether u have the time to walk and groom before buying one.
Some of the dog breeds that are not recommended for children under 10 are:
Chihuahua, Cocker Spaniel,Dachshund,Shiba Inu,Siberian Husky,Yorkshire Terrier.
none of these are bad breeds but due to their sizes they may hurt your child due to hyperactivness or be hurt because they are too little and frigile which can cause them to become agressive later on.
a dogs temperament is inherited then modified by events in its life and training.
training is essential with family dogs and will decrease the risk of accidents with your children considerably, u can train the dog yourself but if u run into problems dont assume the dog will grow out of it, seek help from a profesional.
last but not least  NEVER  leave a small child alone with a dog no matter how reliable the dog has been in the past statistics show that most dog bites causing serious injury involve medium to large sized dogs and children under the age of five years. The dog is usually known to the child or is the family's pet.
good luck  i will write more different pets soon.

Licking

We have a shitzu cross Lasa apso and she's a licker, unfortunately our 16 month old daughter is ALSO a llicker  YECH!!!!!

They lick each others tongues, it makes me want to hurl when I catch them at it and I yell (knee jerk reaction) "NO"and they both stop only to do it all over again with in minutes.

I'm at a loss to know what to do as you can't have your actual eyes on them every second, they can be behind me playing while I'm washing the dishes, I turn around to look and there they go again.

Any suggestions will be greatfully apreciated......except for tongue-ectamies. LOL
