roadtest: the humble mouse

winja by winja Talking Back(May 2007) (rank 40th)

the humble mouse, perfect pet for your child? or not?
mice:

mice are excellent pets because they are cheap and fun to watch a mouse that has been socialised and had alot of human contact can be a great pet for kids.

  •  a mouse
needs a cage that is easy to clean, the floors should be solid not wire as they can damage the mouses feet and cause sores.
  •  a cage can be found in most pet stores but look into hamster cages if you have more than one mouse as the cages made for mice can be quite small and mice are very active.
  •  mice are nocturnal and very active so they will make a bit of noise of a night especially if you choose metal toys like wheels.

  • mice love toys! alot can be made from recycled things around the house, they like tunnels, ladders, wheels(try a plastic wheel or check that it doesnt make too much noise), bird toys and things to chew on.
  •  mice need a sleeping area that is cozy like a nesting box.
  •  mice need to have a friend to be kept happy keeping two females together is the best option as they breed like mad, boys can be kept together if they are related and have never been separated otherwise they will fight and probably  hurt each each other or worse.
  •  male mice do smell more so keep that in mind when choosing the gender.
  •  make sure if choosing a female mouse that it is either in a cage separated from males or is under 6 weeks females can breed as young as 6 weeks and they dont ask if the other mouse is its brother, lol.
  •  my favorite toy for a mouse is the rodent ball its a ball u put the mouse in and they can travel around the house without harm from other pets and cannot escape through holes in walls exc. be carefull when leaving the door open though as i have had to go down the street after my mouse took itself for a walk.
upside of a mouse as a pet:
they are cheap, easy to care for, fun to watch and most kids adore them.

downside of the mouse:
they can smell, are not good pets for very small children as one squeeze will squish them and they have a short life span.

Mice
I have recently bought a mouse and all the paraphernalia that goes with them for the school age kids at my daycare.  It resides in the toddler room until 2:30 when it goes to the schoolies room.  They are responsible for making sure she has water twice a day (morning and afternoon) and they feed them before and after school.  They clean the cage out twice a week and she comes home with me friday afternoon til monday morning.  It's going great so far, and it's taught them a lot as some don't have pets at home.  I thought an interactive pet would be better than a fish, but we couldn't obviously have cats and dogs in daycare.  Great article.

mice
i had them as pets, i had everything for them too, the sad part is the smell and short lifespan, i was so upset when they started passing away one by one (thought it was my fault) but i chose not to get more because of those two reasons,
godd article
