Getting fussy toddlers to eat.....

sluxton by sluxton Talking(May 2007) (rank 146th)

1.  give them dinner early, whenever they start to pick again, and doesn't matter if it's 4.30pm because vegetables and meat are important and whilst they want to eat.....feed them, time of dinner eventually gets later as they get older.

2.  dribble out the food from the least liked to most liked.  my son hates meat, so I gave that first when he is hungriest but now they are both fussy with potato so I give that first.

Sometimes they eat everything on the plate all in one go but other times they are just plain picky so rather than fill them up on biscuits at 4pm and then have non-interested eaters at the dinner table, I just feed them the vegies and meat and so be it whatever they eat later as long as they have had the nutrients they need.

They do grow out of a 4.30pm dinner.  My 3 and 4 year old will eat anytime between 5 and 7pm.  After that, they are too tired to eat properly, even if they've had a midday sleep.  Just guage where they are at and if they are ravenous - give them dinner, or at least some microwaved vegies, and they can have the meat a little later.

Toddlers love to graze.

Good article. You can also make mealtime funtime. Like my son used to not like eating broccoly when he was 2 yaers old I said to him this little tree wants to be in your tummy, same with the omelett I made a smily face omelett and told him that this omelett is smiling to you and waiting to be eated from a smily boy.

Feed them before they get tired....
my daughter just gets up and down and plays until I pull my hair out if she is tired so an earlier feed definitely helps her.

great advice:)

Well tonight i have to put down that Koen absolutely LURVES roast lamb!!! YAY! he usually spits meat out, but when you cook it in an oven bag it is sooo tender so maybe the meat thing has to do with tenderness :)

good advice
I'm lucky, Jay is 15mths old now, however he almost eats more than me in a day!  I try to make sure that he has his biggest meal at lunchtime & pretty much by afternoon tea, he has had all the food groups.  He seems to wake up starving & fills up all morning - so it is the best time to ensure he won't be too fussy.  He slows up as the day progresses, so if he is cranky & tired in the evening & only has a small snack & drink before bed, it doesn't matter.

good advice
Thats a great idea.  I hadn't thought of that.  Harrison is ravenous early in the day, although, he does usually eat a good dinner.  But good idea to get the good food in early so that if he is cranky, he doesn't eat a big dinner, then it is no biggie.  Thanks for that!
