Take Better Pictures of Your Older Child

tracey by tracey Young Parent(May 2007) (rank 7th)

Taking photos of your adolescent child can be a challenge. As kids grow up they tend to get more self-conscious and not so agreeable with getting their photos taken. They tend to either they cop and attitude, get mad or they just act super-silly which makes it even harder to

capture a good shot. Here are a few tips on how to get better shots of your older child:

  1. Take photos of them doing their favorite things. Playing soccer, riding a skateboard or a bike, or even reading. Kids respond better when we are paying attention to what interests them and it just might make your photo moment less stressful on you and them.
  2. Ask them where they’d like to have their photo taken. Let them wear what they choose and give them some “say” in the matter. Older kids have their own agendas. Respect them and they will respond more honestly and openly bettering your changes for a relaxed picture of them.
  3. Let them take some shots of you too. Kids love to take photos, no matter their age and your older child will feel empowered and valued if you request a ‘trade photo shoot’. Take turns with the camera and see what terrific pictures emerge of you and them. It’s a great bonding game to play too!
  4. Shoot details of your older kids that “tell their story”. Often a pair or shoes or a backpack can make for a classic portrait that tells of where your child is at in their life. This takes the pressure off of them because when you are shooting their sneakers, they don’t have to smile! They may have some ideas for this one too so listen to what they have to say.
  5. Ask that your child take a photo essay of themselves. Give them the camera and some time (without you hovering over them) and let them capture photos of the way they see their own life. Encourage them to do a few reflection self-portraits of themselves too. This is not only a great way to bolster their creativity, it’s a wonderful exercise in empowering them as well as letting go a little for you.

Just because your kids aren’t babies anymore doesn’t mean you can’t get great photos of them. Just think outside the frame a little and work with your older child. You’ll be glad you did, and so will they.

Great thinking

I've mostly done this. I've always taken photos of my daughter at things she's been enjoying doing.

Great article too.
