PROBLEM WITH MY SON NOT EATING

Shellshell by Shellshell Talking(May 2007) (rank 172nd)

I have had a eating problem with my 7yr son Lachlan, for quite some time now. I have tried incentives, coaxing him into eating and many other things.

Usually for his school lunch, I pack a sandwich, popper, pkt of chips, snak paks, a chocolate bar, cheese dip, muesli

bar and maybe a banana. I like him to have a good range of food to choose from....OOPS! And most times he comes home and has eaten hardly anything.

He suffers from Pervassive Developmetnal Disorder. It was only explained to me, the last time I had a appt with the school's Guidance Officer and head of the Special Learning Department that when I serve out dinner at night, which could be 1 sausage, 2 tablespoons of vegies and a small amount of potato that Lachlan see's this like a 3 course meal.

This sends his brain into overload, thinking there is just way too much on his plate for him to eat!  Therefore he gives up, with not even a thought to try.

So, both teachers gave me a BRILLIANT thought to try and..................... IT'S WORKING!

They suggested I cut down his lunch to just a sandwich, popper and maybe crackers or something like that, then he will not have so much to choose from, and may eat all his lunch. Also by the time he has tea at night, he will probably be hungry enough to give his dinner a good go.

Well in the last week, most of his school lunch has been eaten, and he's is slowly finishing most of his dinner each night. Well he's giving it a better go than before. He even ate some vegies the other night.....YAY!

And to top my day, he had 2 sausages tonight, and ate all his dinner. I was so proud of him, and gave him lots of praise to a job well done!

Just thought this might help any parents out there, that have school children who have problems with their children not eating dinner at night!

Re: PROBLEM WITH MY SON NOT EATING

Hi, I wrote an article ages ago called 'How to help your child eat all the right food groups'. It involves stickers and I've had lots of feedback on here with good results.

Good luck-hope he continues to improve.

Re: PROBLEM WITH MY SON NOT EATING
My son has been newly diagnosed with this disorder also. Well they think thats whats wrong. He also has obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety . He wouldnt eat as a younger child and I now know that some children will starve themselves to death ?? Its part of the sensory thing that stopped him from eating they think ??  He was on a liquid diet most of his little life , he is now nearly 7 and is only 17 kg . I only put a sandwich and a musli bar or some treat in the lunch box as any more makes him flip out and throw it all out and he repacks the bare minimum again. He rarely eats tea and his specialist said not to force the issue as it makes him dread meals even more. he comes to me when hes hungry and I get him something then and we are all stress free and fed eventually, just dont tell my ex inlaws. EEEK

Well done lachlan
You must be so proud of him and your right sometimes we think we are helping our children by giving them a few things to choose some when in fact we are giving them to much to choose from so they just don't bother.

problem with son eating
sounds good to me shell, and i agree with the teachers as kids will not starve if they dont have a lunch box full of treats.. and it does help with the children not to fill themselves up with so much sugery stuff... i have being certified as a family food educator and we were told that kids can have 6 little meals a day, as long as they had brekkie as thats the most important meal of the day.. Introducing healthy options to them for the rest of the day helps, and take ity from me, as my 3 year old was always in the pantry, and now she is eating healthy she doesnt seem to go to the pantry as much, and will eat more at dinner....
