Coeliac disease becomes apparent in young children when they begin to eat foods that contain wheat, rye, barley and other cereal grain. Gluten is found in these grains, it combines with antibodies in the digestive tract to damage the walls
of the small intestine, and this will interfere with the absorption of many nutrients.
Symptoms;
n Stomach upsets
n Diarrhoea
n Abdominal cramps
n Bloating
n Mouth ulcers
n Increased risk of infections
n Stool is pale, and very strong smelling, and will float
n Growth may be stunted
n Some children may develop anaemia and skin problems
When coeliac disease is diagnosed it is advised to eliminate foods that contain gluten.
There are many foods that contain gluten, breads, biscuits, cakes, crackers, pasta, foods coated with batter, sauces and gravies, most breakfast cereals, and many more. You must be fully aware of always reading labels, when eating out order only very plain foods
Today there are many gluten free products, so a fairly normal diet can still be maintained, it is always better to prepare foods at home to avoid risking exposure to gluten.
If you suspect your child of suffering coeliac disease you will have to visit your family doctor, inform him/her of your concerns, the doctor will organize a test were a camera is placed in the small intestine, they will take a biopsy, this will indicate abnormalities that are common to coeliac disease and from this they will be able to make a diagnosis.
If coeliac disease is diagnosed it is wise to speak to a dietician who can advice you in planning nutritionally balanced meals that are gluten free. If there are nutritional deficiencies supplements may be prescribed.
I hope this helps……….
