Competition and sport with young children.

FireFighterDaddy by FireFighterDaddy Talking Back(June 2006) (rank 52nd)
More and more I'm hearing about sport leagues going to everyone gets a medal and everyone wins. I do believe that everyone should have fun and to teach sportsmanship to our kids. I also believe that children be taught at a early age that sometimes you don't win and when
you do win this is what a good winner is and what a good loser is.. When children become teens and adults while still playing sports they have no idea how to handle winning or losing. I saw not a week ago a 15 year old start crying at a football match because his team didnt make the playoffs. I think we are doing our children harm by not teaching them that we do have winners and losers in life. When children become adults they will expect to win all the time, they wont be able to handle not getting the job, the girl, the boy, its a shock when they realize there are better people in the world then them. I try to have the girls play games that have winners and  non-winners. Teach them how to win and lose they will be better to cope in the real world where there are winners and losers.

It's about the fun
I thought games are all about the fun. We might have a little bit competition in it, but i always tell my children that there is no problem of not being a winner. As long as we've tried our best and enjoy the games, be part of it. Those feelings are better than just try to become a winner.

It's how you play the game..
Good advice for sport and also for life.....  "It's not about whether you win or lose but how you played the game"     -  try your hardest and maintain your self-respect and this will get everyone a very long way.  Thanks for sharing these thoughts FFD :)
