Remember when you were a kid and loved going down the creek? |

We used to go to the Arboretum in Sherwood/Brisbane and catch guppies and tadpoles all the time.
So I finally sourced some tadpoles recently (hard to find with the lack of rain in recent years, but Sydney has had some good rainfall of late) and took the kids,
some old plastic icecream buckets and a small cheap fish net to the creek (more of a storm water drain but who cares!) where the tadpoles were.living and gave them a go at catching the tadpoles.
Apart from Jesse falling in (only ankle deep water) clothes and all, they had a great time and we caught heaps and heaps of tadpoles. Enough to keep some here, give some to the preschool and give some to friends!
Frogs need more and more protection and their populations are dwindling. We also need to keep toad populations under control in QLD and other areas they are spreading to - so look out for tadpoles - if they are completely jet black throughout - they are most likely to be toads so throw them out so they dont live. But if they are slightly transparent, keep them and nurture them into frogs.
It's a great home learning project that costs absolutely nothing to do. Teach your kids about the environment and putting rubbish in the bin all the time. You dont have to spend lots of money going to zoos and Seaworld etc to teach them about how rubbish affects the environment and how we can help certain species survive. The kids also benefit from the outdoors experience and time with parents.
