Toilet Training - My experience

Vickydee by Vickydee Walking(May 2007) (rank 500+)

Before I even had my little boy I was dreading the thought of potty training.  My experience came from watching my friend try and train her son.  Forget the myths of 'boys are always slow' and 'boys are lazy' as I was told, I potty trained my son in

2 days at the age of 2yrs 8mths.  Here is my advice.....

*Plan to spend at least a full week at home. I had friends doing errands for me because a I daren't leve the house.

*Remove any signs of nappies (my son used to always plead with me to put one on him) and insist they wear pants.

Unfortunatley alot of patience (and cleaning equipment) is needed, as well as praise and treats.

My son constantly had accidents for 2 days and I was considering giving up however, with support from friends, I continued and after the second day my little boy was fed up of being wet and woke up on the third day using his potty.  We have the very rare accident even now and again but that's to be expected.

Since I have potty trained my son, other friends have used the same method with the same success, even the friend who had 'toilet trouble' with her first child.  I wish I had known how easy it was, I could have enjoyed my pregnancy then!!!!

Re: Toilet Training - My experience
Mine hated being wet from the moment she was born and practically toilet trained herself soon after her first birthday.  We have a 15 month old at daycare who started last week and who takes herself to the toilet without problems, her mum said she was toilet trained at 10 months yet her brother was still in nappies on and off until his 3rd birthday.  They're all so different aren't they which is why I never put an age on it.  Thanks for sharing this advice.

Re: Toilet Training - My experience
I'm glad I read this - this will be us next summer.  I am thinking we can spend a week at Nanna's - she has tile floors and a huge yard to run around in, so accidents won't be much of an issue.  Jay is interested in toilet training now, ever since his 2 year old friend showed him how to stand and pee.  Whenever he is nudey, he runs into the laundry or the bathroom and pees over the grate on the floor - he has the stance and everything down pat - it's so funny.

Excellent Advice

My oldest was very easy to toilet train, he was toilet trained at 2.2 yrs old. I let him run around with no pants on and just kept putting the potty under him, when I managed to catch him doing a wee, we would jump up and down and make a big fuss, which he though was great. He then did wees in the potty all the time. However I haven't started with my 2.5 year old yet.......he will be much harder, I can just tell.....
