PANADOL AND NUROFEN

georgiepar by georgiepar Talking(May 2007) (rank 168th)

SHOULD PANADOL AND NUROPHEN BE USED TOGETHER

Last year in September Talea had high temps for some unknown reason.  The cause was never determined.  But her temperature reached 40degrees I had already given her a dose of panadol, also striped her off but her temp still climbed.  As a concerned parent I took her to the local emergency room. they asked all the questions as they do. then they decided to give her a dose of nurofen to try to help fight the temp.

I told them she already had some panadol and wasn't due for another dose for another 2 hours. The nurse then told me it is okay to give these two meds together as long as they are at least 3 hours apart from each other.. although it dose say on the nurofen bottle babies 6myhs of age  or older.

THERE HAS BEEN A BIT OF CONTOVERCY ON THIS SUBJECT  LATLEY

So I asked a few people

Pharmacist 1:        agreed with the nurse it is okay

Pharmacist 2:        also agreed

Pharmassist 3:       however had a different opinion he told me that the two meds should be used separately

my  GP                    said yes it's okay

my step mother:    said to stick with the panadol cool baths and icy poles

So there you go 5 different opinions ....

You take what you like from it. Use it or don't that's your choice.  the best thing about opinions  is you don't have to listen if you don't want to take my step mother for example I hardly ever listen to her because she's always trying to tell me the best way to do things.  But the thing is it's not the best way it's just her way of doing thing. I have my own way and so dose every one else.....

Re: PANADOL AND NUROFEN
Oh, just to add another thing I've been told by a doctor: Do not give Nurofen for fevers, give panadol every 3 hours if temperature does not drop.  It says 4 hourly, but it can be taken 3 hourly if the temperature does not go down as a temp of 40+ for very long is more harmful then a dose of panadol 3 hours after the last dose, but also don't give more than 2 doses that close together.  I've never tried it, but it's another thing another doc has said to do to bring temps down.

Re: PANADOL AND NUROFEN

Okay . . .

If you had read MY article properly you would have seen that I was saying that you should NEVER use panadol and nurofren together(at the same time)! These drugs should only ever be taken at least 2 hours apart!

I spoke to many health professionals in relations to my article as i've heard and been witiness to young children accidently being overdosed! Overdosing of either of these two drugs is VERY VERY SERIOUS!

And as an added comment Nurofren is not recommended on children, especailly those under 1 . . . . .

Great Advice

 Fab advice Babe

I have used both together as advised by medical personnel on my kids when only one medication hasn't been able to shake the fever.

In the end, we all have our own thoughts and ways of what we do with our children.

Same thing happened to me...
I was told the same when I took my son in.. I was told that they are not exactly the same medication but the do the same thing... So you won't be overdosing on one.. If you understand what I mean...

His temp was down with in minutes...

I agree Georgie

Hey,

Just reading your advise on the Nurofen,  Panadaol debate, it seems to be that even the doctors have different opinions and we even question at times if the doctors are even right. You can always listen to the advise of others and take it on board only if you choose to. We, as well as our children are all different,  what works for one may not work for another! I enjoy reading advise from others and have got many very helpful tips from this website.  Keep up the good work and yes your opinions are counted too!!!!!!!!!!Look forward to hearing more,

                                                                           Have a Nice Day

that it was okay to use the 2 together, but i felt funny about it so i didnt use them at the same time.

I had been told it was okay because each of the meds had different ingredients but it still didnt feel right for me.We all do the best for our kids.

take care and enjoy your little angels, jenny

fevers

Everyone's advice is so different and we have to remember that all children are different also. One child may only need one type of medication and another child may need something else. My oldest has asthma as so he can't have Nurofen as it can cause problems with asthmatics, so I have to treat him differently to how I would treat my youngest for fevers.

fevers

My two year olds been having fevers every few weeks withiut fail since he was 8 months old ,, he also gets high temps . the highest reading at 40.3 he had two febrile convoultions with the high temps also ..

for him panadole alone didnt help nore did nurofen alone helped him either

we went to a specialist and also the emergency at the childrens hospital they said that i will have to give him panadole then 3 hours later nurofen , i have to also keep a fever diary and the time i gave him his meds as to not forget what i gave him and his temps recorded and also at the times i gave him what ,,as it can be easy forgotten when your childs ill

so heres something like what we do eg

panadole at 12pm nurofen at 3 ,,, panadole 6pm and nurofen at 9

so with saying this the first dose of panadole is 6 hours apart from the first dose

and the nurofen is also 6 hours apart from the first dose we gave him .

this for us has been the only thing that has worked in getting his high fevers down ,,but where told never to give them at the same time as in both together ...

they seem to think that my boys fevers are toncil related they are not infected but fury .

the more info we have has parents the better off we all are in knowing how to treat our children and the more question we can ask our doctors specialists and the hospital ,,,and what works for some dosent always work for another ,,

cool baths didnt help my child at all ,, we where up all night with cloths and sponges

we found he was hot then he started to get the shakes with the cold cause his fever was soo high also , his body was hot and his feet where like ice ,, this was cause he was soo hot the body had shut down some of the blood supply to his feet

its still ongoing with us the fevers we are expecting the next one anyday now

at least we know how we can treat our son when he gets the fevers thats worked for us xxxxx all the best and its great to have as much info on this as we can

Well said Georgie
The hospital told us we should alternate them with 2 hours between panadol and nurofen...So there is 4 hours between the same medication if that makes sense...you are right but opinions are just that opinions...Take them or leave them...Have a great day

Last night

I went to the hospital and was told to give each one every 4 hours but alternate so she is having meds every 2 hours, so panadol then after 2 hours nurofen then after 2 hours panadol again.  Another one said to give them alternately but nothing within 4 hours, so one dose of panadol, 4 hours later a dose of nurufen then 4 hours later a dose of panadol so each one is given every 8 hours.

Last year when this happened the I took her up with a temp of 42 and said she had panadol 3 hours earlier, they gave her another dose followed directly by a dose of nurofen and said that because panadol has paracetamol in it and nurofen doesn't they can be taken at the same time.  Her GP said not to give them within an hour of eachother or they mix together and can cause brain damage.

I've also been told that Nurofen is only to be used in the case of joint or muscular pain and at no other time.

Sorry to confuse you all again, but as Georgiepar pointed out, we have to do what we have to as parents at the time and make the best decision we can.

If my child's temp hits 42 again and she's been stripped off, sponged down, had an icy pole, been given water, is under a fan and had panadol with no results I'll be giving her nurofen as well since a temp of 42 can cause brain damage also.  But hopefully that won't happen again.  Also, like Georgiepar I never found out the cause of the 42 temp or the temp last night, it's still a mystery but I've kept her home to keep an eye on her and she's running wild through the house without any sign of illness.

Bad comment
Why is this a bad comment? Just saying what I have been told and what I've done and would do, not telling others what do in any way.  Not sure why it's got a bad rating opinions are opinions.  everyone's entitled to one.
