"Tick tock" baby burping technique works every time

asha by asha Talking Back(February 2006) (rank 170th)
A couple from the UK sent this tip in to Parent Hacks, but I thought I'd also share it here -- I've since heard from several parents that it works amazingly well!

Simply hold the baby by the armpits (support head with fingers) and allow his legs to
dangle freely. Also, baby's face should be level with yours. Then very gently tilt him from side to side (we call this 'tick tock' and actually say 'tick tock' as we're doing it). 3 or 4 tick tocks are normally enough for that wind to come. We've done this with 2 babies and it works every time, and each of our friends who've tried agree, this is very effective.

I just sit them on my lap up right, pat them on the back (but you don't really need to) it just mite take some time :)

Burping Methods:

1. Hold your baby with her head over your shoulder. Gently rub or pat her back until she burps.

2. Set your baby upright but leaning slightly forward on your lap. Be sure to support her head and back. Gently rub or pat her back until she burps.

3. Lay your baby face down across your lap or a mattress. Turn her head to one side and support it with one hand. Gently rub or pat her back until she burps.

Oh, yes, my friend from NZ taught me this tip, which was from her granny. It's great to do when baby is popping on and off at the boob during breastfeeding. I do that, see if it is a burp; if not, it's time to see if baby needs to do a wee or a poo! (We do Baby Pottying or Elimination Communication - it REALLY helps cut down 'unexplained' crying bouts!)

Never thought of that! WOW!

Atm, no matter how much I burp her before putting her down to bed, Krystana often wakes up a bit early needing to burp. Might try this before putting her down and see if it helps.

Tah!

I'll probably end up giving this a try

If regular burping techniques don't work for me, I'll give this one a try!

This totally works!
Read this advice last night and tried it this morning with Esmee. It works like a CHARM! It works quickly too. I used Tick-Tock three times after feedings and each time Esmee let loose within about 30 seconds. Very slick.

Sounds like great advice. I will certainly give it a go with our next bub.

I am even thinking I may try tick-tock next time when Codi (toddler) has the hic-ups. I wonder if it will work for hic-ups also?
