The importance of a papsmear

tassiebiarch by tassiebiarch Talking(May 2007) (rank 91st)

The importance of a papsmear

These stages can be found early, would rather see these 3 stages than the BIG C BELOW

  • CIN 1 - one third of the thickness of the lining (skin-like cells) covering the cervix has abnormal cells
  • CIN 2 - two thirds of the thickness of the lining (skin-like cells) covering the cervix has abnormal cells
  • CIN 3 - the full thickness of the lining (skin-like cells) covering the cervix has abnormal cells
  • CANCER(the big c)

  • What is cervical cancer?

    A. The cervix is a ring of muscle at the top of the vagina.  It is the entrance to the womb.  During childbirth the cervix expands until it is wide enough to let the baby out.  The surface of the cervix facing into the vagina is covered with a type of skin which can become cancerous.

  • Are there different types of cervical cancer?

    A. This is one of the few types of cancer where there are clear early stages which can be diagnosed and treated.  The first stage is called CIN 1 and simply means that the cells on the cervix are slightly abnormal.  This may have several causes and often clears up after a while.   CIN 2 is not  cancer, but the cells on the surface of the cervix show a number of cancer-like changes which can be seen under the microscope.  The third stage, CIN 3, is close to cancer and is also known as 'carcinoma in situ'.  If left untreated, CIN 3 has a 50% chance of developing into cancer.

  • Pictures from world health

  • I had the Diathermy procedure done and i think it has a more sucess rate than cone biopsys, i have had friends who have had cone biopsys done and they have had to go back 2-3 times i have been back the once.

  • Girls it is so important to have this done i was only 23 when my cin 3 was found i had only had 2 sexual partners since i was 18. It was only found by mistake. The doctor made me have one as he could not find the heart beat of my second child ,so instead of alarming me he thought he would do a papsmear and hopefully the baby would move. he found the heart beat but then had to tell me a week later i had the stage before cancer on my cervix. It hit home and i have them done all the time now

  • There are so many women out there who don't have this done, they don't think of it ,they think its not that important, and then its to late.

  • Please all members on minti ,lets all have a papsmear on a certain date so we are all checked i reckon we should have a national minti papsmear day lets make it the 1st of july have it before but make sure everyone has one before the 1st of july and pregnant women have one as soon as you can after birth its so important that we all do this to many women are dying from something that can be helped before hand.

Re: The importance of a papsmear
Fantastic yet scary article tassie! We were actually talking about pap smears at work the other day and I was shocked to find that the two younger staff members (15 years old) had no idea what they were yet that have had the vaccine needle. For me, just had one myself. Not the most dignified experience but neither is child birth lol!!! Well done you!
