Getting out & having fun - with baby in tow!

nwagon by nwagon Speaking(May 2007) (rank 500+)
You may think it's hard to get out and do some of the things that "normal" people (i.e. people without children) do. Sometimes, all it takes is a phone call to find out it's actually easier than you think!

Some friends & I from mothers group decided we
wanted to do something today, so yesterday I rang the local cinemas because I had heard about a mother room that they had in one of the 5 cinemas. I found out that they only have 1 movie screened in this room a day and the one for today wasn't exactly desireable but as I kept talking to the very helpful lady on the phone (yay for reading cinemas & good customer service) I found out that they were quite willing to have the lights just dimmed instead of turned off for us so that we could bring our babies into a normal screening of the movie that we wanted to see!

So, in the end it was just two of us & our bubs (both exactly the same age) that ventured off to the movie complex. We both had in the back of our minds that we may not make the whole way through the movie! But we did!!!!

So here's my advice...don't feel afraid to get out and do stuff. If you do choose to go to the movie, be prepared. You may need extra things to distract your child than what you would normally for a two hour period. I took a blanket for the floor and sat in the area where they leave spaces for wheelchairs or strollers, I took various toys, a rusk etc.

Also, don't be afraid to shake up their routine a little for just this once. I fed my boy only 1/2 an hour before the movie started and about 1/2 way through he got restless so I fed him again to calm him down...it won't hurt them once!

We really enjoyed oursleves and said that we are definately going to do it again!

Be brave, be relaxed (your baby will only get more upset if you are worried about what people are thinking), and enjoy yourself!

they also do this in our local cinemas....however i am not game to take emily to the movies because i feel she may get restless and start yelling out LOL!!!
Movies are expensive...so when we go to the shops, i buy her a treat instead!
Shopping is fun for me hehehehe!

Hi
We have "babes in arms" sessions at our local cinema and they screen movies all day where you are welcome to take your bubs in.  They do this every Tuesday and even charge slightly less for the tickets.
After all these are your future customers.
They have even had special days for mums with bubs as well
Jalan loves the movies for at least half of it...then she plays lol
Luv Deb

All it takes is a little careful planing and bobs your uncle... Francis usually comes with me every where I go.  We are trying the cinema this weekend...  I don't really want to go but that is only because it is all in French. I like to watch movies in English before I see it in French.. Anyway I have told Hubby and Camille that if Francis starts to act up and I can't stop him then we will go and play with the games that they have for the kids out the front.  But amazingly enough there are plenty of so called adult stuff that can be done with kids in tow.. You just need to look around.

Local papers are great to find out also when things are happening... I often find parks put on special events for both adults and kiddies...

cant say i was ever brave enough to venture to the movies with my first bub (mostly because people told me not to) but with the second i quiet happily venture out and about, we tend to head bush because thats what we like and i cant say i have ever had a problem... although hiking up our local dam carying an 8 month old was a new experience hehe... i've always been of the opinion that babies are so portable, todlers and kidergarteners on the other hand are a bit more lively but loads of fun on outings... great advice :)'s *you have just been MAB'd!!*

Chris's family (being very very very christian) always had church camp and Chris was 3months old when they first went i think my MIL said.  Alex was 18 months when we first went camping but it was my first time to. lol

some ppl can do it and others cant. i stress going out with the kids even now.

I haven't been brave enough to think about the camping thing yet...too worried about it being too hot in summer & now too cold!!! I'm not a massive fan of camping at the best of times...don't mind setting up a tent in a caravan park but not where there's no toilet facilities etc...which I would be more willing to do now that my boy sleeps through the night and even if he does wake, he doesn't scream!

Re: Getting out & having fun - with baby in tow!
camping with bubs is absolutly awsome, always feel so at peace in the bush, i just stress when we go places where other people can and do judge me and my kidlets for things we consider normal... like logan being a total loopy in ya face busy lil kid and bug being well........ a total sap for mum's attention...hehehe!!!
to the point that i wanted to leave the hospital early when i had her because she was so vocal that other new mum's actually complained that she was keeping them up in the other rooms..... i get embarrased by crap like that.... stupid huh? :)'s

your bubba's are so cute. it does get hard when you are out and one start screaming or something. its hard with Alex at times, people look at you with those what have they done eyes and make you feel guilty that they are making a noise. i was lucky that both my bubs were quiet as a baby but once Alex got to 18 months and started his tantrums well thats when i stopped going out much. i always got the hopeless single young mother look from ppl i hated it.

i let chris deal with it now. lol

Re: Getting out & having fun - with baby in tow!
This is great advice, I keep meaning to do this and keep forgetting.  Another option, if available in your area, is to take bubs to a drive in movie... Especially if it is an evening screening, you will probably get bubs to fall asleep on the way.  We can put our seats down and rug up in winter, it is fun.  If bubs wakes, then make sure you have ample food and drinks and toys - just like at home, only a little more confined.  This is awesome if you have a family wagon and can put the seats down and face the car rearward to the movie screen & all snuggle up together and have a picnic too.

hmmm...
I agree but sometimes you just need to be alone for a minute! Like for eg.. my lil toddler follows me everywhere and screams at his mum when I go to work he then cries for 15 minutes at least and when I get home he jumps on me we love him to bits but we all need some alone time and nights are for sleeping for me too hooray for baby sitters when our yearly anniversary comes up.

Re: hmmm...

I totally agree, our original intention was to have a baby free evening out (dads looking after bubs) but it just wasn't working out with everyone's feeding times etc...so this particular friend & I decided that we wanted to get out of the house anyway so this is what we came up with!

And I would like to add that Babysitters ROCK my world!!!

Re: Getting out & having fun - with baby in tow!
Wonderful advice I was indeed one of those thinkers but I will have to give it a go this way we can do mummy fun stuff as well as park etc.. for bub and we can bond as there is no need for a baby sitter to make bub worried

great advice! Babies will only restrict you and your social life as much as you let them.
