Some Information On the dangerous Preservative - 211.... aka E211

emmysmum by emmysmum Young Parent(May 2007) (rank 144th)
Last night on news updates i saw a quick headline about this preservative! It is to be said that Preservative 211 is damaging to your DNA.

This influenced me to write an article on it, as i know alot of us here on minti would be consuming the preservative
and not realising it!

Here is some information for you, which i have summarised from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_benzoate

Preservative 211 has a pH level of <3.6 and is used as a preservative which is known as Sodium Benzoate.
This preservative is known to kill all yeast, fungi and bacteria and is only really effective in acidic conditions (hence to the low pH level).

You will find that this preservative is used in things such as vinegar, chinese foods (the sauces such as soy sauce), fizzy drinks, jams and fruit drinks/ juices.

Sodium benzoate is also used in fireworks....as fuel in whistle mix.

This preservative is found naturally in many foods....one of them being apples.

In combination with ascorbic acid (vitamin C, E300), sodium and potassium benzoate may form benzene, a known carcinogen.

As of March 2006, the FDA is running tests to confirm the validity of the claims.

it is claimed that sodium benzoate by itself, can damage those vital cells in DNA of Mitochondria.

if the mitochondria is damaged- alot of neuro-degenerative diseases can occur, including that of aging process and parkinsons disease.

So the question is - will you be consuming large amounts of preservative 211 aka sodium benzoate, OR will you be reading the labels on the products you buy from now on? I know what i will be doing!

Hope you find this info useful guys! And the site is worth checking out!

Love Kayla.

You may not give 211 up until it makes you unable to breathe as it does to me! Get sick and then you will have wished you listened to this post!

i have been tying to research preservative 211 and to me anyway it does seem dangerous and yes benzene is  a known carcinogen. what i didnt know was that apples contain 211. Does this mean that if i eat apples with a glass of orange juice (ascorbic acid) then this is cancerous??? i am really scared now as i have had cancer three times already (i am a cat with nine lives thank goodness)

Re: Some Information On the dangerous Preservative - 211.... aka E211

you can say that apples contain 211 but it is the quantity of 211 that classidies it as a preservative.  When used as apreservative they use very large amounts comparare to what is found in apples or some berries. So rest assured this naturally occuring substance won't be causing cancer if eaten from the natural substances (unless you eat like 1000 apple followed by 100 litres of oj in one sitting ;-) ) hope i helped a bit and hope you stay cancer free

Like any preservative we probably don't want to consume too much of it.  So it is found naturally in certain foods but when added to a lot of others foods as well, i think this is when our bodies get overloaded and problems can occur with long term use.

Had a look at that link which poonam added below...umm....wonder who funded that research, soft drink companies or drug companies.....maybe I'm just cynical.

Great piece of advice thanks Julie

yaa it feels that u r saying correct. but i have read an article about saying that benzoate prevents tooth decaying. so i m little bit confused. also they r saying that they have tested on rats that bezonate which is added as a preservative in soft drinks is good for health.

check the link below:

Great article Kayla, very informative, scary, your advice will make me more aware, and to also take more  time reading labels. I must say the past couple of years i do take time,  reading labels, and if i find items with no information them, i stay away from them.

great article, Kayla.

I truly believe that a lot of cancers, tumours, behavioral problems and our health in general is greatly affected by food additives and in years to come, I reckon food companies will be paying for it (like the tobacco companies).  The governments around the world really have to look into into them and clamp down.  Please also see my article on Food Additives   http://www.minti.com/parenting-advice/5634/Food-Additives/ .

Kayla, I am really impressed with how you wrote this article.  It provides information about the additive, yet you were wise enough to allow the readers to make up their own mind about it.  Well done for an informative, unbiased piece of advice.

This is some further information that was provided to me: Food Standards Australia and New Zealand has assured the Australian and NZ
Beverages Industry that the apparent concerns raised by this study regarding sodium benzoate have already been investigated and it sees no reason to change its view that sodium benzoate is safe.
