Food Poisoning

hermy by hermy Talking Back(May 2007) (rank 93rd)

                 Food poisoning is applied to illness resulting from bacterial or viral contamination of food.

                 There are many opportunities for contamination to occur, during the trail of harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting and displaying

food. Food poisoning usually happens due to faulty handling and preparation in the home, restaurants or food service outlets…..

  Symptoms;

n      Nausea

n      Vomiting

n      Diarrhoea

n      Cramps

n      Headache

                 Botulism is a rare but grave form of food poisoning caused by nerve toxins….

   Symptoms;

n      Double vision

n      Difficulty in speaking, chewing, swallowing and breathing

                  If you have any of these more severe symptoms go to your local emergency for immediate medical attention…..

                   Your body will rid itself of the organisms that cause food poisoning through vomiting and diarrhoea….let nature run its course even though it may be unpleasant….

                   Do not eat until your body can handle it and then start with very small amounts of very bland foods. Avoid dehydration by sipping water or a mixture of apple juice and water….

Here are some precautions to take when handling and preparing food;

  1. Be careful when handling meat, fish, shellfish and specially poultry.

n      Wash hands before starting any food preparation

n      Remove rings

n      Make sure finger nails are clean

  1. Use hot soapy water to wash food preparation surfaces
  2. Always keep raw foods away from any other foods and dairy products to prevent cross-contamination
  3. Wash your tea towel or sponge with hot soapy water after every use
  4. Keep food refrigerated
  5. Discard food that smells or is discoloured
  6. Do not use food from cans that are damaged

                  If you have the symptoms for food poisoning try and figure out what was eaten, this can help determine which bacteria was responsible……

                  If fever develops or the symptoms persist for more than a few days, seek medical attention…..

               I hope this helps………….

Re: Food Poisoning
I am thankful my body knows how to rid itself of bad things quickly, most of the time anyway! Think I may have had food poisoning when we went out with friends for dinner a couple of mths ago. My poor friends, I projectile vomited on the floor and in their bathroom later that night! (Sorry if TMI!) Think it may have been something when we were out (muscles maybe), as I'm never sick like that. Thanks for the info on preventing this at home. I guess we don't have control when we eat out, something we do rarely anyway. Great article Sandra! *

Re: Food Poisoning

Great Article ,I have always tried to be very careful when preparing meals ,and I never like to work in a messy kitchen so benches are constantly wiped down here.My daughter is now helping a little with the family meal so I am always reminding her of the importance of a clean kitchen and washing of hands and utensils.Another thing is putting cooked meat on to the same plate that the raw meat was on proir to being cooked. Its a big no no I see alot of people that do this .

Re: Food Poisoning
A very topical piece of advice at the moment... There is definitely something going round!  It is so easy to catch a nasty virus, or eat the wrong thing (especially when you are out).  It sure reminds you that we are only human, and at times like this, extremely fragile ones!  My last bout was from a quick bite from some takeaway on the way home - I woke Stephen at about 1am and I was so sick I couldn't speak or walk.

Poor Jaydee got his first turn of gastro at my friends house - he power chundered all over her fireplace.  I was so alarmed that so much could come out of one tiny wee person.  Luckily she is a more experienced mum and took it in her stride and gave me advice on what to do there and then, or I would have been even more alarmed.

Re: Food Poisoning
Great advise hermy..

Also want to add their to be careful buying precooked chicken as well, as that has a high chance of foood poisoning as well... As a few years back me and my family were in sydney and brought a chicken from a take away shop, and it made just me and brodie sick for a week.... It was terrrible..
