Turn an Old Cell Phone Into a New Toy

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(May 2007) (rank 93rd)

Our son was obsessed with trying to get his hands on our cell phones. When he did, he’d hold them up to his ear, chat away and push the buttons just like mom and dad. Trouble was, he actually ends up calling people more often than you’d think.

He’s even managed to get 911 on the line.

We tried getting him a toy cell phone with Mickey Mouse on it, but he knows that thing isn’t real. He’ll cast it aside in a second.

So, when my wife and I upgraded our phones, we gave him our old ones. They’re disconnected from service, so he can get all the fun of pressing real buttons on a real phone without the prank calls.

He loves gabbing on it, and will have gibberish conversations with no one in particular. We love it because it encourages his imagination and speech development. He loves it because he gets to act just like mom and dad.

Re: Turn an Old Cell Phone Into a New Toy

There are many discussions on whether cell phones are safe for kids to play with or not. The most recent finding (September 2009) out of Tel Aviv University medical school has shown beyond any doubt that cell phones are indeed linked to brain cancer.  Here is one of the links:

http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-02/afot-cpl021408.php   The rate is higher for children since their brain is in development and during the growth period it is more susceptible to adverse effects.     What is also less known is that even de-activted phones are capable of sending signals!    http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/story?id=3350003&page=1&page=1   It is best to keep all cell phones away from children. My toddler son was virtually obsessed with cell phones as he enjoyed playing music (the ring-tones) and games on them. Once I ran into this information (above), we completely blocked his access to any cell phone -- It was not worth the risk. And, he had plenty of other toys to consider playing with.    Mansour

The best place to go instead of giving your children old cell phones go to the local shops that put away all of there old display phones. There is nothing in side them they are hollow but are a real phone on the outside. We used to go to a Telstra shop and ask them for a old display phone. My kids loved it.

Re: Turn an Old Cell Phone Into a New Toy

A friend of mine did that with her old phone, and child wonder decided to use mine when she couldn't find hers. Not good!

My 5yr old decided for his birthday last year that he wanted either a mobile phone or an MP3 player like his brothers. Was too old for toys he reckoned. Well he got the MP3 and now he listens to all his songs on it. Sorry I am drifting...

Turn an Old Cell Phone Into a New Toy
Hi there

I am afraid that I wont be giving my old mobile phone to my kids to play with. There have been many various health warnings about mobile phones I'd prefer not to take the risk with my children.

If my children want mobile phone they can have them when they are way older. Hopefully by then these phones will be safer and more will be known about their risk. Yes i myself have a mobile but it's only used an an emergency contact and when i'm at home it's always put away. Out of sight - out of mind.

Cheers Kellz

If they aren't turned on what possible health risks are there? My boys both have an old nokia that has no battery...

Re: Turn an Old Cell Phone Into a New Toy

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond.

The reason why I wont allow my little ones to play with old mobile phones is because they all contain s small amount of radioactive material ) a bit like our microwaves. . .  This material is located in the ear pieces - that is why there has been so much talk about whether the phones cause cancer.

As there is NO proper proof either way I am not prepared to allow my young kids to play with old mobile phone. ( just as i wouldn't allow them to play with an old microwave)

Cheers Kellz

Re: Turn an Old Cell Phone Into a New Toy

All-

Unless there are loose parts or pieces children can choke on (or antennas!) old cellphones are perfectly safe.  They are made of plastic designed to be in direct contact with the face and there is absolutely no radioactive material in a cellphone (or a microwave for that matter).  Only when powered up, phones and microwave work by transmitting RF radiation, exactly like your wireless internet, cordless home phone, baby monitor, etc.  Even then, they are perfectly safe and do not cause brain cancer.

It's still a good idea to remove batteries though.  Not only could they leak  but even an old, deactivated cellphone with no account is able to dial 911.

Hope this clears things up!

Re: Turn an Old Cell Phone Into a New Toy
Yeah, I've heard a lot of reports that cell phones are pretty grody.

I don't think it's anything a little disinfectant or bleach couldn't handle. Just like day care centers or other parents wash kids toys that get slobbered on and food dropped on them. If the phone stops working...no big deal. It's an old one you're not using anyway, right?

Again, the phone shouldn't be able to make calls. I suggested only giving one that doesn't work.

Hi there,

Sorry but i don't think you can clean of radio active material . . . .  But in the end the decision to allow your child/children to play with these things is up to you  . . .

Personally . .  I wouldn't and don't take the risk.

Re: Turn an Old Cell Phone Into a New Toy
Haha, we ended up doing the same thing - he still manages to get mine now and then and call people, at the moment he sends blank text messages.  The only thing is, I want it back off him for the mobile muster - for every old mobile you hand in, they (the recycling company), will plant a tree...  I don't like my chances, however for anyone else on the land of oz that may be interested, here is the link:
