Forming your own Playgroup.

mum2four by mum2four Talking Back(May 2007) (rank 85th)

I had just moved to a new area and just coming out of post natal depression.I did not know anybody in my area ,had no licence, but luckily for me there was a lady down the road who had children too,I had only met her once through my husband ,but she

came and asked me if I would like to go to play group with her.

Her and a group of friends would get together once a week they formed their own playgroup. We would alternate between each others place each week.On occasions we would go to a park and have it there also .There were about 6 initially that were in the group that grew to  10 at one time  just through word of mouth.

We all had our box of tricks that we would pull out for our playgroup-

Box of tricks

Paper ,different colour paper , paper plates, colouring in books and old magazines

Paint -water based were always best easier to clean up and wash out of clothes.

Coloured feltpens and pencils ,puff  paint pens were great for decorating a shirt with the childrens own creation.

scissors ,sharpeners, rubbers ,rulers and other stationary, stapelers , hole punch and split pins were always handy too.

wool ,bits of material ,balloons ,glue, wood glue was the best could be used to glue on almost anything.

and other odd and ends we would think the children could make something out of.

keep old newpaper  to place on table (for easy cleaning )

We always did an activity with the children every week ,my children made lots of loverly things. Each week we would all take a plate of food and different fruit that way the children got to taste varying different fruit. If we had any clothes that we no longer needed for our children we would take them to playgroup and all have a look through them and take what we wanted also ,as we had varying ages we didnt have to buy a lot of new clothes for our children either.

My children have fond memories of playgroup ,and so do I.Unfortunatly our children grew too old for playgroup and all went off to school so it ended for us.

So if you have a group of friends why not form your very own playgroup and get together every week and do activities with your children ,a special time for children and mummies to chat and play together.Make it a specific day every week and if one of your members does not have a licence please be of assistence to them and offer to pick them up if they do not live too far away as I know how much this group helped me and I felt comfortable around them as it was a more relaxed enviroment then a community playgroup and my children knew them all very well .Good luck and if any of you decide to give it a try I hope you and your children enjoy it as much as my children and I did.

Re: Forming your own Playgroup.

I know a lot of people say the community Playgroups are clicky etc but the one i go to is a fantastic group.  Well organised and really a great bunch of mums and a few dads!

It's a great idea to start one with friends if possible, sometimes a group of strangers can be confronting but on the other hand good to get out of your comfort  zone and do something different.

The added benefit of community ones are also Toy Libraries.  You can try new stuff without having to buy it.  Great for gender reversal toys.

I've made some life long friends from playgroup and even though i was dubious about it at first, i'm glad i went along now!

cheers Julie

Re: Forming your own Playgroup.

I ran a playgroup for a while. It was a lot of work for me as I took over from someone who had left it in a shambles, but it was worth it.

Playgroup Australia can put you in touch with playgroups in your area as well as provide help and support in setting up or running a playgroup. Joining a state playgroup association gives you added benefits of having insurance, support, and access to many things you might not otherwise be able to get; such as invitations to activities, discounts at certain places. Networking with organisations for extra support such as NAPCAN and the Breastfeeding Association is also very useful for many playgroups.

Cheers, DA

Re: Forming your own Playgroup.

Thank -you for taking the time to read and comment on my article .Yes it really helped me and my children as before we moved I was stuck at home with the children and no way of  getting around as I didnt have  a licence so the children didnt really have kids their age that they could play with either as we were out of town with no neighbours. After a few yrs I gained the confidence to try for my licence again and passed the first time after a few lessons.I thank my playgroup friends for giving me my  confidence back.

                                                      thanks Cham

Re: Forming your own Playgroup.

Thats a great idea. I tried heaps of playgroups with my first child but I found the mothers sooo clicky. You know.."my child wears pumpkin patch, yours wears Big W" I couldn't stand it. I now have a lovely group of friends and we all meet up once a month for a bigplay day.

Thanks for the article, Jo xx

Re: Forming your own Playgroup.

Thanks for the comment ,well we had none of that as most of the time our children were dressed in each others hand-me-downs.

                                      Thanks Cham
