Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks

Anonymous Author (June 2007)

Stretchmarks are a scar which forms within the deeper layers of the skin called Collagen Fibres. Collagen Fibres are your skins support which helps with elasticity, But these fibres can start fraying when there is excessive stress brought onto the skin due to rapid growth. These fibres can also break

due to repetitive stress and tension which makes the skin look torn and purple.

Pregnant women are on top of the list as most vulnerable to get the dreaded stretchmarks, but the next groups at risk are teenagers undergoing growth spurts during adolescence and women who have put on a lot of weight rapidly.

Men are definitely not immune to them, but women are more likely to get them due to the more bodily functions that happen to them that are more likely to stretch the skin.

The bad news is that you can't help getting them in the first place: stretch marks are hereditary.

The best way to pre-determine that you are more likely to get them during pregnancy, is to actually ask your mother, as you usually inherit her skins elasticity.

There is nothing much you can do about getting your stretchmarks to disappear as tests show that most creams and remidies do not work (they can help them fade but as for the tear in the Fibrous tissue, it cannot be repaired).

Just remember.... more than 70% of pregnant women get stretch marks... I myself look like i have been dragged behind a race-car over gravel LOL! But there are people out there in the same (if not, worse) situation than ourselves... Stretchmarks fade in time and also adapt to the colour of your skin in more time....

As for me, i am still waiting for mine to fade after 2 years. But i wear mine with pride now, it really goes to show how cool our bodies are to be capable of keeping a little baby within

Big hugs to all, and thanks for reading,

Luv channy xx

Re: Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks

haha that is so true. I used all the creams and things that are supposed to help stop stretch marks and bragged about not having them... then one day at around 7 months POOF I had a belly full! And the next 2 pregnancies , the stretch marks just extended on the ends of the old ones HAHA! But its ok, it is just proof of the 2 beautiful babies I have and the one on the way!

Re: Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks

i totally agree with you Chantell, i wear my stretch marks with pride too..

after i had Alisha, i would apply a little cream here and there...
but now i don't even bother at all, because when i look at the stretch marks, they make me proud of the labour i went through...
and what i had to overcome to bring Alisha into this world :)

i don't even care if my stretch marks never go away...
that's not what being a parent is about :)

thanks for putting a moral at the end of your story...
it was a great article !

Re: Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks

The stretchmarks on my boobs I got while breastfeeding have gone now thankfully! I already had some really light ones around my hips before falling pregnant, but have a few big ones on my right hip which have faded heaps now anyway. But you're right, why be ashamed? I don't mind if that skin is on show occasionally. They're my proud battle scars!  From what I've heard from others though, some creams do help in fading the marks, one being Palmers Cocoa Butter apparently. I used it sometimes but not consistently while pregnant, don't know if it helped. But its worth a try. Good article! *

Stretch marks really are sort of a badge of honor. I have a love hate relationship with mine.. I hate them because they don't look attractive but without them I wouldn't have my son. My greatest joy.

Re: Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks
yeah i dont think mine are going anywhere anytime soon..  atm my belly looks like a big prune LOL!
i reckon its because i had a rapid weight loss not long before i fell pregnant and the rapid weight gain stuffed around with my skin... some of my marks are around 1cm thick and quite long but i can notice the colour slowly fading...
cheers for your comment Angie

Re: Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks
Great article Channy, I have found Bio oil helps even out the colouring and smooths the texture. This helps make them less noticeable. They will never go short of lazer technology but this is a cheap alternative that gives pretty good results as long as you realize they wont go from using it,just diminish and appear less noteable. Hugs Crystal

Re: Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks
hey there crystal...
i have looked up laser skin surgery, they cannot guarantee great results and it can be quite costly.... like you said, go the cheaper alternative.. it may take a little longer but the results are exactly the same as there is no way to repair the torn tissue unless you opt for a very expensive plastic surgeon... id rather stick with the skin im in :)
hugs to you too!

Re: Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks

You are so right Channy......It's an amazing thing to able to carry a baby (or 2 or 3) inside us.....stretch marks are nothing.......compared to that!!

Excellent Advice by the way....

Re: Advice for those with the dreaded stretch-marks

I am happy with skin I am in (all the massive amounts of it!) I am proud of the reminders of pregnancy, and also I figure that no one but my hubby and kids see em anyway, so why worry about them.
