Relaxing Techniques

hermy by hermy Talking Back(June 2007) (rank 46th)

As parents we really cannot avoid stress, but we can try and reduce its’ impact on our health.

                    Sitting meditation; can exert a calming effect on our bodies as well as our minds, it reduces stress, slows the heart

rate, and lowers blood pressure;

n      Sit comfortably in a quiet spot. Close your eyes and breathe deeply and slowly

n      Focus your attention on an object, it can be anything in the room, or on your own breathing. This will help calm your mind

n      Sit quietly for 2-3 minutes to start with, you can increase this, as time allows

n      When your mind wonders, simply return your attention to your focus point. It will became easier with practice

                      Foot massage; is a really soothing technique. A combination of heat and pressure points is used

n      You will need some smooth pebbles a large bowl and hot water, as hot as your feet will bare

n      Add a few drops of lavender oil

n      Place your feet in the bowl, roll them back and forth applying gentle pressure

                   Stretching routine;

n      Sit cross legged, making sure you are comfy, cross your arms and place one hand over each knee. Breathe in slowly for a count to ten

n      Breathe out bending forward and dropping your head, for a count to ten

n      Breathe in, return to an upright position and repeat, this time re-crossing your legs and arms so that the legs and arms that were at the bottom are now on top

                  These are a few relaxing techniques, I use when the children are asleep, I got the idea from a book called Earth- wise living. They help me wind down after a long day….

                  I hope this help…………

Re: Relaxing Techniques
Relaxation is something I rarely ever do! I find it so hard to relax. Reading your article has prompted me to start trying it. When Isabella's asleep I should set some time aside to do some sitting meditation. And I should do more stretching in my exercise routine too! Great article Sandra, thank-you! *
