My experiences with pocket nappies

mcm by mcm Young Parent(June 2007) (rank 3rd)
Pocket nappies are basically that. A pocket in which you place something absorbent. These could include terry towelling, hemp, bamboo, organic cotton or microfibre.

I have a few pocket nappies but I am not fond of them as I don't enjoy stuffing them. Others find that relaxing and prefer
the ease of pockets. They can be convenient once stuffed as they can be put on like a disposable with velcro fastening. (Some do have snaps)They are easy for when in the car for example. I think they are much easier for carers too who find fitteds, flats and covers too cumbersome.

Some pockets need a cover but most have a PUL or fleece outer making it an 'all in one' when stuffed. The outer is waterproof and breathable.
The inner is usally microfleece, mircosuede or fleece so its easy to clean so there is no need for an additional liner.

Re: My experiences with pocket nappies
I loved my pockets for night use with missy moo esp filled with hemp and microfibre

However my fav was always a fitted with a cover ... I didnt have to worry about the stuffing moving and i knew they were always stuffed... Important to me cause I went out one day and had forgot to stuff her pocket...... not a good day out believe me.. I also found that fitted were so much easier to make than pockets.....

I miss nappy days...... my baby grew up so quick
hugs on a good article

I love fitteds and covers too. Oh no about using a pocket without insert! I am just too lazy to stuff them! :o I have a few for my MIL to use so they are left stuffed in a bag.

Are fitteds easier to make? I would love to make some but i assumed a pocket is easier.?

Re: My experiences with pocket nappies
So are they like a sort of greener alternative to disposables?  Where do you get the 'stuffing' how hard are they to stuff, and is it very viable economically?  I am interested in alternatives to disposables, but not keen on the old fashioned cloth nappy.

Re: My experiences with pocket nappies
You can use any absorbent material to put in the pocket. Hemp is a popular choice but you can also use cotton, bamboo or microfibre.

Its cheaper than using disposables over time as you wash and reuse. They sound expensive at about $23 for the pocket and about $10 for the insert. (You would need about 20) But over time you save a lot of money not using disposables. It would be even cheaper if you can make them yourself or you can use terry flats or cut up old towlels for the stuffing. I prefer to use fitteds and covers though the pockets are just as convenient as disposables.
